JOB DESCRIPTION: La Academia’s Bus Driver provides safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Regular attendance is an essential function of the position
- Operates assigned school buses on assigned routes in accordance with printed trip schedules and in accordance with specified stop, sequence, and time schedules.
- Rapidly learns routes and the operations of equipment related to duties.
- Reports any bus malfunctions or needed repairs.
- Reports delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations, using telephones or mobile two-way radios.
- Pre-& post-trip inspection of vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order.
- Complies with state & federal traffic regulations to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.
- Follows safety rules as students are boarding and exiting buses, and as they cross streets near bus stops.
- Picks up and drops off students at regularly scheduled locations, following strict time schedules.
- Reads maps and follows written and verbal geographic directions.
- Regulates heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort.
- Keeps bus interiors clean for passengers.
- Maintains knowledge of first-aid procedures.
- Maintains order among pupils during trips to ensure safety.
- Reports all discipline concerns immediately and in detail.
- Communicates effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
- Maintains good student conduct on the bus.
- Responsible for ensuring proper seating securement for students based on their individual need (i.e. Wheelchair Hook-up, Seatbelts, etc.).
- Assists disabled students in getting on and off the bus when needed.
- Assures that students get on and off the bus in an orderly fashion.
- Responsible for accurate completion and submission of any paperwork necessary for the transportation operation including, but not limited to, repair tickets, emergency evacuation forms, accident reports, incident reports, student counts, Bus Conduct Reports, Employee Time Sheets, and benefits information.
- Responsible for being courteous, pleasant and demonstrating respect for all students, school personnel, parents and the general motoring public.
- Completes safety and operational checks of the school bus and any special equipment before all trips.
- Follows all State and Federal rules and regulations. Adhere to the procedures, policies, and practices presented in the “Bus Driver and Bus Attendants Handbook”.
- Reports to work as scheduled or before to prepare the bus and start the route on time regardless of weather conditions.
- Restocks disposable items and provides supervisors with inventory usage and data.
- Assists outside organizations using school facilities, as assigned.
- Follows all school and building safety regulations.

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; such as cleaning supplies, pails and trash, and potentially students in the event of an emergency. The employee will sometimes push/pull.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS & CONTINGENCY:
- Valid Delaware Driver's Certificate with a passenger transportation endorsement and a valid D.O.T. approved medical certificate
- Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record Check, Check Criminal Background Check & Delaware Child Protection Registry
- Social Security Card & I-9 Form with appropriate forms of identifications
- Verification of Credentials and Past Employment
- Ability to Pass a School Bus Driver physical, TB test, & Drug Screening
- Successfully complete DOE school bus aide training (1 day)
- Must reliable transportation to and from work
- Applicants must operate all types and sizes of school buses safely and on a specific time schedule in varied and complex topographical, weather, urban traffic, and rural conditions
SALARY & BENEFITS: This is a Full-Time 10-Month position with Health, Dental, Vision and Pension. Hourly Rates are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
