Primary Purpose:
Supervise and observe all aspects of the daily operations of assigned school sites, ensuring compliance with USDA/TDA guidelines. Provide first-line coaching, training, and oversight to on-site staff to achieve service of high quality meals and a safe and cost effective operation at each site. Foster positive relationships with Van Alstyne ISD staff, parents, and faculty to promote participation in the child nutrition program and enhance understanding of its health and nutrition policies.
Qualifications:
**Education/Certification **
● High school diploma or GED
● Food Managers Certification required
● Valid Texas driver’s license and ability to travel within the district daily
**Experience: **
● Three years of successful management in food service, preferably multi-unit operations and school food service
**Special Knowledge/Skills: **
● Knowledge of menu planning, food purchasing/inventory control, and preparation of foods in a food service environment
● Ability to conduct on-site kitchen inspections at assigned sites
● Ability to implement policy and procedures
● Ability to manage budget and personnel
● Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
*Child Nutrition Operations *
● Oversee child nutrition managers to ensure quality control and consistency in operations.
● Oversee production records, food/supply purchasing, inventory control, organizational management, and all other aspects of daily kitchen performance.
● Regularly complete inspections and review performance of each site, provide assistance to managers as needed.
● Develop, implement, and maintain departmental procedures for food service operations including Standard Operating Procedures and Food Safety Plan.
● Ensure assigned sites have exceptional food presentation and the general appearance of the kitchen is clean, neat and orderly. Ensure assigned sites provide exceptional customer service.
● Monitor all food and supply purchases within annual department budget or set guidelines.
● Review and assist the cafeteria managers in the development of work schedules and rotations.
Safety and Sanitation
● Ensure all food items are prepared and stored in a safe and hazard-free environment according to guidelines.
● Ensure all receiving/storing/temperature logs are completed accurately at all sites.
● Enforce standards of cleanliness, health, and safety following health and safety codes and regulations.
● Ensure compliance with city health inspection guidelines, monitor the scores for assigned sites, and assist Cafeteria Managers with improvement plans when needed.
● Ensure cafeterias maintain a safe work environment and report unsafe working conditions.
● Ensure all equipment is in good working order. Recommend replacement as needed.
● Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
*Training and On-Site Support *
● Develop and perform on-site training to all cafeteria staff.
● Create and present department training content for campus-level staff.
● Track training hours accordingly per USDA and district requirements for department personnel.
● Ensure all staff Food Handler Training is completed and track Certified Food Manager training.
● Present at department meetings and cafeteria staff in-service events.
*Policy, Reports, and Law *
● Implement federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
● Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
● Responsible for ensuring daily deposits of all monies received from meal programs.
● Ensure employee time records are accurately maintained and processed in a timely manner.
*Personnel Management *
● Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
● Engage with and resolve employee issues promptly and effectively.
● Provide ongoing training and support to ensure exemplary operation in the child nutrition department.
**Supervisory Responsibilities **
● Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of child nutrition managers at assigned sites.
Miscellaneous
● Travel to campuses regularly to fulfill job responsibilities.
● Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
● Participate in professional development, department meetings, and special events as assigned.
● Perform additional duties as assigned by the child nutrition director to support the mission and goals of the department.
