Job Title: Director of Facilities Support Services

Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Anschutz is seeking a strategic, service-oriented, and collaborative Director of Facilities Support Services (FSS). This senior leadership role reports to the Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management and Planning and serves as a key member of the executive management team. The Director provides leadership and oversight for a broad portfolio of campus support services, including custodial services contract oversight, waste management, bookstore, food services, vending, mail and distribution services, printing and design services, pest control, grounds, roads, parking management, fleet management, snow removal, docks, disposals, event setup and support services, and emergency-response support activities.

The Director is responsible for ensuring reliable, high-quality, transparent, customer-focused service delivery across areas that support CU Anschutz and CU Denver students, faculty, staff, visitors, events, construction interfaces, and day-to-day campus operations. The position develops and implements strategies, processes, standards, training expectations, resource plans, and performance measures that support operational excellence, financial stewardship, safety, regulatory compliance, sustainability, and the University’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership, Strategy & Employee Engagement

Lead, mentor, and develop the Facilities Support Services leadership team, including Assistant Directors, managers, supervisors, staff, and student workers in areas of responsibility.
Develop and implement long- and short-term goals, policies, procedures, service standards, and operational strategies aligned with campus priorities and departmental objectives.
Provide executive leadership for personnel administration, including recruitment strategy, training and development, performance planning and evaluation, coaching, recognition, accountability, and resolution of complex personnel matters in partnership with HR and appropriate campus partners.
Serve as Appointing Authority for assigned areas and ensure subordinate leaders complete performance management processes in a timely, constructive, and effective manner.

Service Operations & Resource Management

Provide overall management and performance oversight for FSS service lines, including custodial services contract management, waste and recycling, parking, fleet, mail/distribution, food/vending, printing/design, pest control, roads, grounds, snow removal, docks, disposals, and event support.
Establish, communicate, and continuously evaluate service expectations with campus clients, including standards, service levels, operational requirements, work processes, and customer-facing outcomes.
Develop, monitor, document, and coordinate business and financial processes to ensure sound stewardship, efficient use of resources, and compliance with applicable University, campus, State of Colorado, and federal requirements.
Coordinate product, equipment, service, and process evaluations to stay current with advances and best practices in facilities support services, custodial operations, waste reduction, and service delivery.

Safety, Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance

Direct, evaluate, and continuously improve work processes to promote a culture of safety, mitigate operational risks, and maintain compliance with applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
Develop and direct initiatives that support environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, protection of campus assets, workplace quality, and continuity of essential services during planned and unplanned events.
Serve as a primary FSS point of contact for Emergency Response Team activities, training, and events.

Campus Events, Partnerships & Collaboration

Coordinate with campus units and outside entities to ensure successful service delivery for special events, commencement-related activities, emergency response activities, and large-scale campus operations.
Work collaboratively and professionally with customers, administrative staff, faculty, students, vendors, contractors, affiliates, and external partners to understand needs, resolve issues, and improve the campus experience.
Partner with sustainability and campus operations stakeholders to support landfill reduction, waste reduction, recycling, responsible materials management, and broader environmental stewardship goals.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this position is eligible for a limited hybrid work schedule, in consultation with the Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management and Planning. The role requires regular on-campus presence and availability for operational needs, special events, emergency-response activities, and in-person leadership responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in management, business, public administration, facilities management, or related field.
- An advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis if the degree is in a field of study directly related to the work assignment.
Ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in the Facilities Management profession.
Seven (7) years of the required experience must include significant supervisory and management responsibilities.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in fiscal management, personnel supervision, service operations, training and development, and customer-focused facilities or support-service delivery.
Experience managing custodial services and parking management is STRONGLY preferred, as well as waste and recycling, fleet, mail/distribution, event-support operations, vendor services, and/or large-scale building services operations.
Experience establishing service standards, performance metrics, customer expectations, and transparent service-level practices across multiple operational units.
Participation and certification from either the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) or Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA), International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA), and/or Indoor Environmental Healthcare and Hospitality Association (IEHA).
Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in the Facilities Support Services profession in a university setting, academic medical center, or similarly complex campus environment.
Experience with management of Custodial and Parking Management vendors and services.

Extensive knowledge of budgetary, financial, operational, and business-management practices related to facilities support services.
Extensive knowledge of current facilities and business management methods and practices.
Working knowledge of principles and practices of personnel management and areas of responsibility
Ability to effectively supervise managerial personnel.
Broad and diversified professional management skills, including the ability to lead by example, delegate appropriately, make difficult decisions, mentor direct reports, and build effective teams.
Ability to manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines, prioritize competing operational needs, and maintain composure in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, present information to campus leaders, stakeholders, staff, and external partners.
Proficiency with computers and electronic resources, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and related tools used to manage budgets, workflows, communication, and operations.
Ability to interact effectively with diverse, multicultural populations and be professional and inclusive in all interactions.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $135,000 - $155,000.
