Position Summary
The Medical Director provides clinical leadership, physician oversight, and medical consultation for Bumblebee Health's substance use disorder (SUD) and behavioral health programs in Texas. This is a part-time, remote leadership position focused primarily on clinical oversight, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and provider supervision.
The Medical Director ensures that medical services are delivered in accordance with evidence-based practices, Texas state regulations, Joint Commission standards, and Bumblebee Health's clinical policies and procedures.
This position is administrative and supervisory in nature. There are no required direct patient care responsibilities, although opportunities to provide telemedicine evaluations and ongoing treatment are available for candidates who wish to incorporate clinical practice into the role.
Required Qualifications
- Active, unrestricted physician license in the State of Texas(MD or DO)
- Current DEA registration (or ability to obtain, if direct patient care is desired)
- In network with Texas Medicaid Acute Fee for Service
- Board Certified in one of the following:
- Addiction Medicine
- Addiction Psychiatry
- Medical Toxicology
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- Psychiatry
- Physicians with significant experience treating substance use disorders are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Previous experience serving as a Medical Director, Clinical Director, or physician leader in behavioral health, addiction medicine, or correctional healthcare preferred.
- Strong knowledge of ASAM criteria, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and evidence-based addiction treatment practices.
Credentialing Requirements
Candidates must be currently credentialed and in-network or eligible and willing to become credentialed with Texas Medicaid Acute Fee for Service.
Preference will be given to candidates who are already fully credentialed with these health plans.
Essential Responsibilities
- Serve as the Medical Director and physician leader for Bumblebee Health's Texas clinical programs.
- Provide medical oversight, supervision, and clinical consultation to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
- Ensure medical services meet applicable federal and Texas state regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
- Participate in quality assurance, utilization review, peer review, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Develop, review, and approve medical policies, clinical protocols, standing orders, and treatment guidelines.
- Provide consultation on complex medical and addiction-related cases, including participation in interdisciplinary case conferences.
- Review and authorize laboratory testing, toxicology screening protocols, medication protocols, referrals, and standing medical orders as appropriate.
- Support regulatory readiness and compliance with Joint Commission standards, Texas Division of Public and Behavioral Health requirements, and applicable Medicaid regulations.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on clinical program development, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain current knowledge of addiction medicine best practices, telemedicine regulations, and changes in state and federal healthcare laws.
Optional Clinical Responsibilities (If Desired)
Candidates interested in providing direct patient care may also:
- Conduct telemedicine medical evaluations.
- Diagnose and treat patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions.
- Prescribe medications, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT), when clinically appropriate.
- Complete intake, progress, and discharge documentation within the electronic health record.
- Provide ongoing medication management and follow-up care.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, detoxification, residential treatment, outpatient treatment, or correctional medicine.
- Experience supervising advanced practice providers (NPs/PAs).
- Experience with telemedicine delivery models.
- Familiarity with Texas Medicaid policies and Managed Care Organizations.
- Knowledge of Joint Commission accreditation standards and quality improvement methodologies.
