Job: Pastry Chef
Department: Bakery
Supervised by: Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager, Department Manager
Sunrise ShopRite of West Caldwell, New Jersey is currently seeking a FULL TIME Pastry Chef for our ever-busy retail Bakery Department. We are looking for someone to provide our customers with desserts, pastries and additional Sunrise ShopRite Signature Items with creativity and finesse. The proven skills in baking high quality pastries should be matched by your ability to create creative and fun new recipes to bring to the department.
This potential candidate will need 3-5 years Pastry Chef experience in a high volume environment. We are looking for a candidate that is creative, forward thinking and can bring great new refreshing ideas to our customers. Experience in a retail setting is preferred but not a requirement.
Responsibilities Include but are not limited to the following:
- Providing excellent customer service (including greeting customers, listening and responding to inquiries).
- Prepare a wide variety of goods such as cakes, cookies, pies, bread, pastries etc. following traditional and modern recipes
- Create new and exciting desserts to revive our variety and engage the interest of customers.
- Work with and create exciting Sunrise Signature bakery items.
- Decorate pastries using different icings, toppings etc. to ensure the presentation will be beautiful and cutting edge.
- Monitor inventory for baking ingredients such as flour, sugar, mixes etc. and make appropriate orders within budget to always be in stock.
- Guide, engage and motivate pastry assistants and bakers to work more efficiently.
- Maintain a clean and orderly working station and adhere to health and food safety standards at all times.
- Dynamically selling products by providing customers with information needed to make educated decisions based on ingredients and/or any food allergies related to orders.
- Operating the Bakery department equipment within safety guidelines.
- Training of all other associates as needed within the department.
- Assisting with other duties as needed and assigned.
Job Requirements
- Proven experience as Pastry Chef, baker or relevant role
- Great attention to detail and creativity
- Organizing and leadership skills
- Working knowledge of baking with ingredient limitations (pastries that are gluten free, sugarless etc.
- Certificate in culinary arts, pastry-making, baking or relevant field
- Willingness to replenish professional knowledge
- Must be able to read, write, interpret and communicate in English.
- Must be able to follow all Food Sanitation and Quality Assurance standards at all times.
- Must able to work within a diverse department.
- Must be able to work within strict deadlines and have proven time management skills.
- Must be able to handle a large amount of bakery production.
- Must be able to lift up to 25lbs. and occasionally 50lbs.
ShopRite is a retail supermarket with strong kitchen, catering and bakery/cafe operations. We have 2 locations in New Jersey: Parsippany and West Caldwell.
