District Representative

Job description

SUMMARY:

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar seeks an enthusiastic, highly organized, creative, and self-motivated professional to serve as a District Representative in her El Paso Office. This District Representative will implement a long-term strategic grants community engagement plan. This individual will work to disseminate information regarding available federal grants, assist interested grant applicants in navigating the federal grant process and track awards to the El Paso community.

This position also handles the local engagement portfolio for economic development, transportation, infrastructure, labor unions, housing/homelessness, faith leadership, and veterans.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Create community events and engagement activities to support the Congresswoman’s priorities and to promote District services and projects and attend the events of other community organizations for the same purpose.

· Create, develop, and promote grant and community workshops for key community stakeholders to learn about the grant support the Member’s office can provide to the community.

· Produce a monthly newsletter to promote grants work and highlight key successes within the community.

· Manage requests for letters of support for federal grants and track the outcomes of those proposals and all federal grants awarded for the district.

· Act as the representative for the Congresswoman within his or her area of responsibility including meeting with constituents and community organizations, attending community meetings, verbal communications with constituents, and serving as a liaison with community organizations and federal, state, and local agencies to maintain effective relationships for the Congresswoman.

· Inform the Congresswoman and the District Director of all happenings in assigned issue areas by screening district media sources and interacting with constituents.

· Assess community feedback from outreach for problems requiring legislative action and make recommendations to the District Director and Chief of Staff.

· Prepare periodic reports for the District Director and district activities in his or her assigned issue areas.

· Maintain accurate and up-to-date database of community contacts in assigned issue areas and relevant files and information related to those issue areas.

· Maintain a good working relationship with Congresswoman Escobar, staff and constituents.

· Accepts performance-based criticism and directions.

· Work well under pressure and able to manage stress effectively.

· Work in a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE):

· At least 1 year of outreach experience.

· Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of related experience or training in legislation or equivalent experience.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

· Bilingual English/Spanish preferred;

· Excellent organizational, writing, presentation and communication skills;

· Ability to connect community priorities to the Congresswoman’s legislative and oversight work;

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications;

· Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

· Traveling frequently to community events and organizations is expected. A significant amount of the District Representative’s time will be spent out in the community. Mileage is reimbursed.

· Some work is mainly performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usually moderate.

· Ability to work in a small workstation without an expectation of privacy.

· This position reports directly to the District Director.
