DA VINCI SCHOOLS LEAD SAFETY OFFICER
Purpose Statement
The job of Lead Safety Officer serves the purpose of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities; minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; and communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well-being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors. Reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer.
Essential Functions
- Oversees, coordinates, and supervises the functions of the Safety Officers and Grounds Supervisors during their assigned shifts to effectively promote and maintain the safety of all students, staff, and visitors on any of the Da Vinci campuses.
- Develop and prepare work schedules and assignments for Safety Officers and Grounds Supervisors and submit to administrators according to established procedures.
- Develop security plans for special events including staffing and location of Safety Officers; assist in selecting appropriate personnel to meet security needs.
- Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate Safety Officers to ensure effective performance and adherence to school safety protocols; collaborate with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to implement progressive discipline measures when necessary.
- Provide evening and weekend oversight for school events, ensuring appropriate safety coverage, responding to incidents as needed, and supporting a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors.
- Review and approve timecards for Safety Officers and Grounds Supervisors, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with payroll deadlines and policies.
- Analyzes activities that may be in violation of school policies and/or an indication of possible criminal activity (e.g., unauthorized visitors, threats against students, possible violations of school policy, etc.) for the purpose of assisting law enforcement personnel, developing information necessary for determining action, and/or providing documentation.
- Collaborates with other school and Home Office personnel, assigned School Resource Officer(s), representatives of local agencies, etc. for the purpose of providing information and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of school properties.
- Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
- Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing direction, ensuring their safety and providing site security.
- Intervenes in potential conflicts and emergency situations, using de-escalation techniques, for the purpose of minimizing disruptions of campus activities and/or injury to involved parties.
- Maintains a variety of files and records, including daily and weekly logs (e.g. schedules, payroll, investigations, guidelines, office logs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information for future reference and/or audit for compliance to established policies.
- In collaboration with CAO, develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Safety Team.
- Maintains job related safety and security equipment for the purpose of ensuring for the availability of equipment in a safe and clean operating condition.
- Maintains norms for appearance of all uniformed personnel in required professional attire provided by Da Vinci Schools while on duty at any school functions on and off site only.
- Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g., lunch room, classrooms with substitutes, detention, dances, home games, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.
- Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Patrols school properties (e.g., grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, arms/disarms buildings, searches, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.
- Prepares a variety of documents (e.g., incident reports, activity logs, memos, letters, procedures, work schedules, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
- Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of school properties.
- Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions to school administration for the purpose of providing information and/or direction for ensuring campus security.
- Refers incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate site personnel for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
- Responds to a variety of situations (e.g., accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
- Uses all available resources and technology to address cyber issues online and on social media including but not limited to threats, harassment, and cyberbullying
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
- Supervises work and workplace safety standards for the purpose of ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and developing a program of preventive safety on a schoolwide basis.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include administering first aid; operating standard office equipment and using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices and procedures; critical observation; enforcing discipline policies; enforcing rules and regulations; handling hazardous materials; investigating problems; and utilizing appropriate physical and mechanical restraint.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, present information to others, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include methods of investigation; recordkeeping; cultural differences within the student population; job-related codes, laws, rules, regulations, and policies; chain of custody of confiscated items including contraband; community resources; and best practices to ensure school safety and security.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans; independently interpreting data to establish effective protocols; and use safety-related equipment. Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 75 pounds of force; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes (e.g., hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy) and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and requires the ability to climb up and down stairs of two or more floors on a regular basis.
Experience
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate. A representative way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Two years of experience working with adolescents, including background in community corrections techniques, juvenile parole and probation, law enforcement, and/or four years’ experience as a campus security officer in a K-12 setting, or
- Experience as a supervisor or trainer in one of the fields mentioned above.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency
Targeted job-related education with study in a job-related area.
