Dexter is hiring a Sous Chef to help lead the kitchen inside our boutique hotel in Elk Rapids.

This is a leadership role working directly alongside the Executive Chef to help shape one of Northern Michigan's most exciting emerging food and beverage programs. At Dexter, we're building far more than a hotel restaurant—we're creating a gathering place where exceptional food, thoughtful design, craft cocktails, and genuine hospitality come together to serve both travelers and the local community.

As Sous Chef, you'll play a key role in establishing the standards, culture, and culinary identity of the property. From elevated café offerings and seasonal menus to private events and community-driven experiences, you'll help build a program that is known for quality, creativity, consistency, and hospitality. Pay & Role Details

$22/hour base pay + shared tip pool

About Dexter

Dexter is a 29-room boutique hotel that brings together thoughtful design, a daytime café, and an evening cocktail lounge. The space is designed to feel warm, intentional, and lived-in—more like a home than a traditional hotel.

Food and service are central to the experience, and every team member contributes directly to how guests feel when they're here.

What You'll DoKitchen Leadership

Assist the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations
Lead service and kitchen execution in the Chef's absence
Train, coach, and support line cooks and prep staff
Help maintain a positive, accountable kitchen culture

Culinary Execution

Prepare and plate dishes to established standards
Ensure consistency, quality, and presentation across all menu items
Assist with menu development, specials, and seasonal offerings
Maintain strong execution during both café and evening service

Kitchen Operations

Manage prep lists, inventory levels, and station readiness
Assist with ordering, receiving, and product organization
Monitor food waste and support food cost management
Ensure smooth opening and closing procedures

Standards & Cleanliness

Maintain food safety and sanitation standards
Keep the kitchen clean, organized, and service-ready
Ensure proper storage, labeling, and rotation of products
Lead by example in maintaining professional kitchen standards

What We're Looking For

Previous kitchen leadership experience preferred
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to lead calmly and effectively during service
Passion for hospitality and quality food
Positive, team-oriented attitude
Desire to grow within a developing food and beverage program

Schedule Expectations

Mix of weekdays, weekends, and holidays
Peak season: May–October (higher volume and earning potential)
Typical hours:
Café: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Lounge: 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment
