Job Description:
Pure Blue Tech is seeking a Production Assembler to join our rapidly growing tech startup. Under direct supervision, the Production Assembler performs precision hand-assembly tasks including trimming, folding, and preparing thin, paper-like membrane materials for use in production, carefully handling delicate components to prevent damage, maintains required level of output, monitors output by completing detailed quality inspections to ensure product meets customer requirements, and keeps accurate records and logs associated with production, measuring, quality, quantity and any other necessary record-keeping activities.

Pure Blue Tech is a membrane and water treatment technology innovator and manufacturer with the mission of reducing the cost of treating and reusing water. The startup was founded to develop and commercialize patented fouling reduction technologies for industrial and municipal applications. These technologies, produced in its Bellingham headquarters, will increase clean water productivity, enhance efficiency, and reduce cleaning and maintenance. The company and its founder have been awarded multiple awards from organizations including U.S. EPA, U.S. Army, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, WA State, University of Washington, Forbes, and High Country News.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Membrane Leaf Preparer:
1. Measuring, trimming, folding, creasing, taping, and placing membrane leaves (thin, sensitive, paper-like material).
2. Checking quality, consistency, and product integrity along the way.
3. Working with a second preparer to do these steps. Must be good at communicating, taking direction, and working in tandem with colleagues.
Finishing Assembler:
1. Confirms product does not exceed outer diameter dimensional requirements.
2. Verifies trim measurements using calibrated tools such as ring gauges, trim gauges, etc.
3. Places seal carriers at both ends of the element using calibrated tools such as ring gauges, core tube extension gauges, etc., with a light, precise touch to avoid creasing or damaging delicate membrane material.
4. Performs product inspections using air lines, leaf adhesives and visual spot-checking for bubbles on product; makes careful, controlled repairs by hand.
Rolling Assembler:
1. Operates element rolling table to hand-assemble thin membrane sheets into a spiral configuration, changing membrane leaf adhesive drums as required.
2. Carefully folds and guides membrane leaf material to ensure all glue lines, side and end seals are applied evenly and cleanly during the manufacturing process.
3. Some positions may verify glue ratio, including proper placing, accuracy, consistency and diameter of glue lines in accordance with Manufacturing Standard Operating Procedures.
Trim Assembler:
1. Verifies gauges have current calibrated sticker prior to using hand tool to prevent damage to product.
2. Confirms trim measurement using calibrated hand tools such as ring gauges, trim gauges, etc.
3. Operates standard product trimming machine, including cleaning blade before using it, and hand-guides thin material through the trim process with steady, even pressure to avoid tearing or misalignment.
APPLIES TO ALL:
1. Handles and prepares thin, paper-like membrane and brine spacer materials by hand, using fine motor control and a gentle touch to avoid tearing, creasing, or otherwise damaging delicate sheet materials.
2. Loads/unloads product from manufacturing transport equipment on to appropriate machine or production equipment for tasks.
3. Maintains daily, weekly and monthly productivity goals set by production management, including clean-up, rework, core tube preparation or other production activities.
4. Documents product data information such as serial number, defects, rejects, scrap etc. on production logs, reports or summaries as well as any other record keeping activities as it pertains to products throughout shift.
5. Follows all quality, safety and lean manufacturing policies, processes or procedures including sustaining work station and area in cleanliness in accordance to 5S standards.
6. Informs Production Supervisor and/or Production Lead of increased pattern of defects in products.
7. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum 0-6 months manufacturing, assembly, or hands-on craft experience (e.g. sewing, papercraft, model-building, or similar fine-motor work is a plus); high school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES:
1. Excellent hand dexterity and fine motor control, with the finesse and gentleness needed to trim, fold, and handle thin, paper-like membrane materials without damaging them.
2. Set up, operate, and make minor adjustments to machines used in assembly tasks.
3. Sustained focus and presence throughout repetitive hand-assembly tasks, maintaining consistency and precision from the first piece of the shift to the last.
4. Basic to intermediate language skills, including verbal and written proficiency in English; ability to read work instructions in English.
5. Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team while maintaining flexibility to changing priorities.
6. Ability to work in a detailed-oriented atmosphere with accurate record-keeping, outstanding follow-through to meet production requirements and in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
7. Recognize numbers and millimeters and perform basic mathematical calculations with the aid of a basic hand-held calculator.
8. Deal with standard and basic non-complex issues; basic problem-solving ability; carry out simple verbal work instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and/or WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Typical physical demands and the work environment characteristics an employee must meet and encounter while performing the essential functions of the job:
1. Will be required to stand for the duration of the shift. As with most production positions, long periods of standing (approx. 6 to 8 hours) and walking are necessary to run the assigned equipment.
2. Some lifting and material maneuvering is required to set up and during material change over. Average lifting weights may reach 20 to 50 lbs. Typical lifting techniques in the prep area are 2-person. The average times lifting is required is approx. 2 to 3 times per shift (5 to 10 minute increments).
3. Repetitive, light, precise grasping and handling is required to trim, fold, and transfer delicate element packs onto prepped membrane carts without damaging them.
4. Typical pushing requirement is equivalent to approximately 20 lbs. Carts will need to be transferred to the Rolling area approx. 6 times per shift.
5. Waist-high lifting for membrane and overhead for brine spacer material is required.
6. Gentle, controlled hand grasping is required for handling thin membrane and brine spacer material without tearing or creasing it.
7. Follows all quality and safety policies.
8. Maintains work station and area cleanliness according to 5S standards.
9. Participation in daily exercise activities is expected.
10. Safety shoes, safety glasses, and cutting resistant gloves must be worn.
11. Other Personal Protective equipment such as hearing protection may also be required depending on the position being performed.
12. Must be able to work extended hours per the demands of the business specifically for month-end closing. Willing and able to work overtime as needed.
13. Comfortable and effective in a fast-paced startup environment. Willing to assist and contribute to areas outside of primary job role.
