Hostler
DEPARTMENT NAME: Maintenance
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Hostler is responsible for the general cleaning and upkeep on the interior and exterior of the buses, the staging and assigning of buses for daily service, including the computerized assignment function, switching out farebox cash boxes, filling fare media and the fueling of all RTA vehicles, including the checking of all lubricants and fluids.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Clean driver’s area, dash, operator’s seat and control panel.
- Clean passenger seats, rear deck, ceiling, hand rails, panels.
- Clean all doors/windows/step wells.
- Close all windows and doors when work is completed.
- Remove any trash and debris from bus.
- Remove graffiti from interior of bus
- Mop floors as necessary.
- Drive trolleys and diesels to fueling bay for fueling and inspections (will require putting trolley polls off wire and putting back on wire when the bus is parked).
- Inspect bus for graffiti, cut seats, any sign of body damage, report to supervisor.
- Cycle handicap lift on accessible coaches at designated area.
- Drive coach through wash bay to wash exterior.
- Periodically wash backs of buses by hand or pressure washing equipment.
- Clean and degrease wheels, and coach rear panels, and other areas as assigned.
- Place coaches for revenue service manually or by using Smartyard.
- Complete shift reports at end of shift, get meter readings or fluid levels of DEF, Coolant or other fluids.
- Clean and fuel any RTA vehicle as required.
- Clean vehicle chassis as required.
- Probe farebox, pull and dump cash box.
- Fuel vehicles in the approved manner to assure full tanks without fuel spillage on the fueling area and into the drainage system.
- Check levels of engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid (when so equipped)and add proper amounts of the appropriate fluids.
- Capable of using the Fluid Management dispensing system to service vehicles, or when needed, record disbursements of fuel and lubricants on the designated record forms while being careful to record vehicle identification number and vehicle odometer or hubometer mileage. Records must be accurate and legible.
- Report defective lights, brakes, steering and other vehicle defects to the coach placer or supervisor, including making entries of defects in the work order system.
- Have sufficient clerical skill to accurately and legible record disbursement of fuel and other fluids.
- Make all necessary reports and keep records, both written and data entry, in accordance with RTA policies, procedures and requirements or requirements of federal, state or local authorities.
- Perform Coach Placing duties such as assigning buses for pullout, trippers, holds, swings, including using Smartyard, coordinating bus assignments with Dispatch, making manual pullout assignments, managing the buses within the bus parking garages and other related CoachPlacing duties.
- Work in a safe manner with all required protective devices in accordance with RTA safety policy and procedure.
- Keep work area in a clean and safe condition, including fuel lane, parking bays or other areas as assigned.
- Clean fueling and washing area after buses have been processed.
- Other functions as necessary to maintain the cleanliness of the fleet, to stage fleet and to fuel vehicles.
- Requires punctuality and regular attendance.
- Supports the mission and goals of RTA.
- Some contact with interdepartmental staff.
- Limited exposure to confidential data.
COMPENTENCIES:
- Ability to use rag towels (exchanged as needed), rubber gloves, water hose/mop/mop bucket, broom, air hose and vacuum machine and assorted cleaning supplies and safety equipment needed to remove all dirt and graffiti from interior of coaches.
- Requires ability to visualize end results of several related functions and work independently within established policies and procedures.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Primarily in a temperature controlled garage. Works around soapy water creating slick walking surfaces. Some smoke/dust/fumes. Good Lighting in all work areas. Subject to be outdoors to relocate buses to other facilities. Noisy due to engines running and wash bay equipment operating. Extended periods working on concrete floors.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Able to stand on feet for long periods of time. Good manual dexterity. Able to lift approximately 35 pounds. Ability to maneuver equipment in and out of buses. Ability to drive vehicles. Ability to communicate verbally/radio/telephone. Must be able to work around moving equipment. Ability to perform following manual tasks (bending, stooping, lifting, walking, and climb steps frequently).
POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED SCHEDULE: Full-time position, 40 hour work week. Hours may be 1st shift (7am-3:30pm), 4th shift (5:45pm-2:30am) or 6th shift (9:45am - 6:15pm). Specific shift will be based on GDRTA's current need.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age requirement 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED certificate required.
- Have basic mechanical aptitude in order to understand the checking of fluids on all RTA vehicles and noting defects to ensure the safe operation of all RTA vehicles
- Must have a CDL Class B Permit with airbrake & passenger endorsement.
- Must be able to obtain a CDL Class B License with airbrake & Passenger Endorsement.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is an ATU (Amalgamated Transit Union) non-exempt position with a pay of $20.70/hr.
