Modus Advanced, Inc.
Location: Livermore, CA
Pay: $33-36/hour depending on experience
Shift:
- Shift A: M-Th, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Position Overview
Join the Modus Advanced team as a CNC Machinist and take ownership of setting up and running previously programmed jobs. In this role, you'll bridge the gap between programming and production—taking jobs that have already been programmed and proven, building up the tooling, and getting machines running to produce quality parts.
At Modus Advanced, one day matters. The precision components you'll produce often go into applications where reliability isn't just about performance—it's about protecting and saving lives. Your technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to quality will directly impact our ability to deliver excellence to our customers.
What Success Looks Like
A successful CNC Machinist can take a previously programmed job, build up the tooling, get the machine running, and start producing quality parts—without needing a senior machinist or programmer to hold their hand. You can solve the simple problems that come up during production (typically 5-30 minute fixes) and know when something bigger requires escalation.
The key differentiator from an Operator: you don't just run machines—you set them up. You load tools, set tool offsets, mount fixturing, and set fixture offsets. When an operator identifies a problem, you're the one they come to for solutions.
Key ResponsibilitiesMachine Setup and Operation
- Set up and operate CNC machines including VMCs, HMCs, and 5-axis machining centers
- Load tools and set tool offsets for production runs
- Mount fixturing and set fixture offsets
- Take previously programmed jobs from setup through production
- Select appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds based on work instructions
- Perform complex setups requiring multiple fixtures and work holding strategies
Problem Solving and Quality Control
- Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment
- Tweak offsets to bring parts into conformance when tolerances drift
- Solve simple machining problems (5-30 minute fixes)
- Maintain feedback loop with quality department
- Ensure parts are inspected before sending to QC
- Document inspection results and maintain quality records
Process Documentation
- Interpret engineering drawings, work instructions, and router information
- Maintain accurate job traveler information and production records
- Develop and document processes for repeatable production
- Support continuous improvement initiatives
Required QualificationsEducation and Experience
- Certificate or Associate's degree in Machine Shop Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or equivalent experience
- 3-6 years of hands-on CNC machining experience
- Experience with aerospace, defense, or medical device manufacturing preferred
- Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate in English
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings with GD&T
- Experience with CNC machine setup: loading tools, setting offsets, mounting fixturing
- Ability to make offset adjustments to bring parts into conformance
- Experience with multiple CNC machine types (VMC, HMC, 5-axis preferred)
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments
- Familiarity with quality management systems (AS9100/ISO 9001 environment preferred)
- CAD/CAM software experience noted but not required at this level
Important Note on Experience
We're looking for candidates with CNC machining experience, not manual machining. Manual machinist experience without CNC exposure is generally not applicable for this role. If you have extensive manual machining experience but limited CNC experience, you may be better suited for an Operator position to start.
