Role:
The Flex Pharmacy Technician supports both prescription verification and fulfillment functions to ensure pet prescription orders are accurate, complete, compliant, and prepared for timely dispensing and shipment. This role verifies prescription information, resolves discrepancies, prepares and packages orders, supports inventory and equipment operations, and collaborates with pharmacists, customer service, and veterinary offices to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality pharmacy service.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced pharmacy environment while following applicable laws, regulations, standard operating procedures, and medication safety standards.
Location: In office, Monday-Friday first shift, occasional Saturday
Responsibilities
Prescription Verification
- Verify prescription information, including patient details, medication, dosage, quantity, refills, directions, and veterinarian authorization.
- Answer and manage inbound client and veterinary clinic calls, provide accurate prescription-related support, document interactions, and escalate clinical questions to a pharmacist as needed.
- Review prescription orders for accuracy, completeness, and compliance before processing.
- Identify and resolve prescription discrepancies by coordinating with pharmacists, veterinarians, customer service representatives, and customers as needed.
- Ensure prescriptions meet applicable federal and state requirements prior to dispensing.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records of verified prescriptions and related communications.
- Provide timely and accurate information to internal partners regarding prescription status, clarification needs, or order-related issues.
- Escalate clinical, legal, or regulatory concerns to a pharmacist or supervisor as appropriate.
Prescription Fulfillment
- Prepare and package prescription orders for shipment, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and professional presentation.
- Pull medications and match products to prescription labels and order information.
- Count, seal, label, and organize medications accurately and efficiently.
- Present labeled medications to the pharmacist for final verification.
- Stage completed orders for shipment in accordance with workflow procedures and quality standards.
- Support timely order processing while maintaining accuracy and patient safety.
Inventory Management
- Assist with receiving, stocking, organizing, rotating, and replenishing medications and pharmacy supplies.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and report discrepancies, shortages, expired products, or damaged items.
- Help ensure adequate stock levels are available to support pharmacy operations.
- Follow proper storage, handling, and security procedures for medications and supplies.
Equipment Operation
- Operate pharmacy equipment, including counters, scales, automated dispensing systems, and other tools used in pharmacy operations.
- Use pharmacy software, order management systems, and related technology accurately and efficiently.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and report malfunctions, issues, or maintenance needs promptly.
Quality, Safety, and Compliance
- Adhere to strict quality standards and security measures to help ensure medication safety and prevent errors.
- Follow all standard operating procedures and comply with applicable federal and state laws, pharmacy regulations, and company policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workstation to promote workflow efficiency and accuracy.
- Protect confidential customer, patient, and prescription information.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and support continuous improvement in pharmacy operations.
Collaboration, Teamwork, and Training
- Collaborate effectively with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, customer service representatives, and other team members to support smooth workflow and excellent customer service.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams, customers, and veterinary offices.
- Assist in training new pharmacy technicians on verification, fulfillment, safety, and workflow procedures.
- Contribute to a positive, supportive, and team-oriented work environment.
- Flex between verification and fulfillment responsibilities as assigned based on operational needs.
Qualifications
Experience:
- 1+ year of pharmacy technician experience required.
- 2+ years of pharmacy technician experience preferred, particularly in prescription verification, fulfillment, mail-order pharmacy, or high-volume pharmacy operations.
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Professional Certifications: Registered Pharmacy Technician license as required by the applicable state of operation.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
- Experience with prescription verification processes.
- Experience with pharmacy fulfillment, packaging, inventory, or shipping workflows.
- Experience operating pharmacy equipment such as counters, scales, or automated dispensing systems.
- Familiarity with veterinary or pet prescription medications.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple workflows, and maintain accuracy under time-sensitive conditions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify and escalate discrepancies appropriately.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Proficiency with pharmacy software, order management systems, and computer applications.
- Knowledge of pharmacy standards, medication safety practices, and applicable regulations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with pharmacists, technicians, customer service, and veterinary offices.
- Basic math skills, including the ability to count, measure, and verify quantities accurately.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to adapt between verification and fulfillment workflows based on business needs.
