Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Process Development Scientist is responsible for advancing products from early scientific concepts through development, scale-up, and readiness for GMP manufacturing. This role bridges research, laboratory execution, quality control, and manufacturing by designing robust, reproducible processes and translating them into clear, controlled documentation. The position requires strong scientific judgment, hands-on laboratory capability, and the ability to author and maintain protocols, development reports, and manufacturing-ready procedures. Occasional travel is required to support technology transfer and process implementation at manufacturing sites.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and optimize processes to transition products from R&D into scalable, GMP-ready manufacturing
Author, review, and maintain development protocols, batch records, SOPs, and technical reports for both R&D and manufacturing use
Lead or support technology transfer activities, including on-site collaboration with manufacturing teams and troubleshooting during scale-up
Execute and oversee laboratory experiments to support process development, including formulation, purification, and analytical characterization
Collaborate cross-functionally with Quality Control, Laboratory, and Manufacturing teams to ensure processes are robust, reproducible, and well-documented
Support in-process and release testing activities as needed, including interpretation of QC data and trending results
Identify process risks, variability, and opportunities for improvement; propose and implement scientifically justified solutions
Ensure all development activities align with applicable quality system expectations and data integrity principles
Maintain thorough documentation of experimental data, process changes, and development rationale
Participate in cross-training efforts and provide technical guidance to laboratory and QC personnel

Required Qualifications

PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, or a related scientific discipline
Demonstrated experience in process development, formulation development, or scale-up within pharmaceutical, biotech, or regulated life sciences environments
Strong ability to write, review, and maintain technical documentation, protocols, and SOPs
Deep understanding of translating experimental work into controlled, repeatable processes
Hands-on laboratory experience with formulation, purification, and analytical techniques
Ability to travel periodically to support technology transfer and manufacturing operations
Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting or leading technology transfer into GMP manufacturing environments
Working knowledge of quality system expectations and regulatory frameworks relevant to pharmaceutical manufacturing (e.g., GMP, GLP, ISO-aligned systems)
Familiarity with analytical and QC methods such as pH, density, endotoxin testing, protein assays, chromatography, and filtration techniques
Experience collaborating with Quality Control and Manufacturing teams during process validation or scale-up activities
Experience in protocol lifecycle management, including development, revision, and change control
Comfort working in dynamic environments where roles may overlap and cross-training is expected
