Contract / Fractional | Approximately 15–25 Hours per Week Initially
Scrivas is seeking a highly experienced, hands-on engineering leader to assume technical oversight of SAI, our AI-powered clinical documentation platform.
SAI currently includes a React web application and Flutter mobile applications for iOS and Android and is in beta with active users. The platform has been developed in partnership with external development resources.
We are looking for an experienced technical leader who can represent Scrivas' interests on the engineering side and help us take the product from its current beta stage toward a stable, scalable production platform.
This is not a traditional advisory Fractional CTO engagement.
We need someone who can get into the code.
The successful consultant must be capable of reviewing our existing architecture and codebase, diagnosing difficult technical issues, personally solving complex engineering problems when necessary, reviewing the work of our development partners, and establishing appropriate engineering standards and processes.
Immediate Mandate
Your initial engagement will focus on four priorities:
1. Understand what we have.
Perform an independent technical assessment of the existing React and Flutter applications, architecture, integrations, APIs, development practices, testing, monitoring, deployment processes, and technical debt.
2. Stabilize the product.
Work with Scrivas and our development partners to identify, prioritize, diagnose, and resolve technical issues affecting our beta users.
3. Establish technical ownership.
Serve as Scrivas' senior technical representative when working with external developers and other technology partners. Review estimates, architecture decisions, code quality, proposed solutions, and technical deliverables.
4. Create the path forward.
Help Scrivas determine the appropriate architecture, development processes, vendor structure, and internal engineering resources required as SAI grows.
What You Will Do
- Review and understand an existing React/TypeScript web application.
- Review and oversee Flutter applications for iOS and Android.
- Conduct code and architecture reviews.
- Diagnose complex application defects.
- Personally contribute code when appropriate, particularly for complex or high-priority problems.
- Identify technical debt and prioritize remediation.
- Establish application monitoring, logging, error tracking, and performance visibility.
- Improve automated testing and regression testing.
- Review pull requests and development deliverables.
- Establish coding and code-review standards.
- Improve CI/CD and release-management practices.
- Work directly with external development teams.
- Evaluate vendor estimates and proposed technical solutions.
- Translate business/product requirements into technical implementation plans.
- Collaborate with backend and AI/LLM development resources.
- Evaluate the product experience around AI-generated content, latency, streaming, failures, retries, and human review.
- Advise leadership regarding technical risk, priorities, architecture, vendors, and future engineering investments.
- Help determine which technical capabilities should eventually be brought in-house.
Required Experience
We are looking for someone with substantial production engineering experience, including:
- Senior-level React and TypeScript experience.
- Strong modern frontend architecture experience.
- Experience with production mobile applications.
- Experience reviewing and troubleshooting existing codebases.
- Experience diagnosing difficult production defects.
- Experience with APIs and backend integrations.
- Experience with cloud-based SaaS applications.
- Experience with CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and production support.
- Experience with AI/LLM-enabled applications.
- Technical leadership experience.
- Experience managing or overseeing third-party development resources.
- Excellent technical and business communication skills.
Experience with Flutter, healthcare technology, HIPAA-regulated applications, Python environments, RAG/LLM architectures, and early-stage SaaS companies is strongly preferred.
This Engagement Is NOT For Someone Who:
- Primarily provides high-level technology advice.
- No longer works directly with software/code.
- Primarily manages projects rather than engineering.
- Wants to outsource all technical analysis to junior developers.
- Has AI strategy experience but limited production software engineering experience.
We are specifically looking for a senior technical practitioner and engineering leader.
Initial Engagement
We anticipate an initial 3-month engagement of approximately 15–25 hours per week, with the opportunity to extend the relationship based on Scrivas' needs and the consultant's performance.
During the first 90 days, we expect the consultant to:
- Complete an independent technical assessment of SAI.
- Identify and prioritize major technical risks and technical debt.
- Establish a prioritized plan for resolving beta application issues.
- Improve application stability and technical visibility.
- Establish appropriate engineering, testing, code-review, and release standards.
- Evaluate our current development model and external resources.
- Assume the role of Scrivas' primary senior technical representative.
- Provide leadership with a recommended 6–12 month engineering roadmap.
- Recommend the appropriate long-term internal/external engineering structure.
When Applying
Please provide:
- A brief description of an existing application you inherited and stabilized.
- Your current level of hands-on React/TypeScript development.
- Your Flutter/mobile application experience.
- Your experience building or supporting AI/LLM-powered production applications.
- Your experience managing or overseeing external development teams.
- Your healthcare/HIPAA experience, if applicable.
- Your hourly rate or proposed monthly fractional engagement rate.
- Your weekly availability.
- Whether you work personally on the engagement or delegate work to other members of your firm.
Please do not apply if you are seeking a purely advisory Fractional CTO engagement. This role requires hands-on technical involvement.
