About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Lead Retina Technician to join our fast-paced ophthalmology/retina practice. This individual will oversee daily clinical flow, support physicians during patient care, assist in training and development of technicians/scribes, and ensure high-quality patient care and operational efficiency across the office.
The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, dependable, and experienced in retina workflows, imaging, injections, and ophthalmic documentation.
Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Care
- Perform patient work-ups including:
- Visual acuity
- Intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Medication reconciliation
- History taking
- Dilation preparation
- Assist physicians during retina examinations and procedures
- Prepare patients for intravitreal injections, lasers, and minor in-office procedures
- Administer diagnostic testing including:
- OCT
- Fundus Photography
- Fluorescein Angiography
- OPTOS Imaging
- Visual Fields (if applicable)
- Ensure exam rooms are properly stocked, cleaned, and prepared throughout the day
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within EMR systems
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise ophthalmic technicians and scribes
- Train new hires on clinic flow, documentation standards, imaging protocols, and physician preferences
- Assist with technician scheduling and workflow coordination
- Monitor patient flow to maintain efficiency and reduce wait times
- Serve as a point of contact for clinical staff questions and troubleshooting
- Ensure all clinical protocols and compliance standards are followed
- Work closely with the Practice Manager and Physicians to support operational goals, staffing needs, workflow improvements, and overall practice efficiency
- Adapt to the evolving needs of the practice and assist in maintaining a collaborative, team-oriented environment
- Provide feedback to management regarding workflow improvements and staffing needs
Administrative & Operational Duties
- Review schedules daily to prepare imaging, injections, and room assignments
- Coordinate with front desk, billing, and authorization teams regarding patient care needs
- Monitor inventory and clinical supplies
- Assist in maintaining equipment functionality and reporting service needs
- Help implement office protocols and quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications
- Minimum 3+ years of ophthalmology experience required
- Retina experience strongly preferred
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
- Strong understanding of retina medications and procedures
- Experience with ophthalmic imaging equipment
- Familiarity with EMR systems (Nextech preferred)
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to multitask in a high-volume environment
