General Description
The Museum Shop Assistant is responsible for the daily operation of the Museum Shop, including retail sales and admissions. As a primary representative of the museum, you will greet guests and provide a comprehensive overview of the historic property and available tour options.
The ideal candidate will be well-versed in the museum’s history and mission, possessing a strong knowledge of Thomas Jefferson and his era. You will use this historical context to engage visitors and explain the relevance of shop merchandise to the museum's broader educational goals.
Responsibilities
Visitor Services
● Opening & Closing: Coordinate with the Museum Shop Manager to ensure the property is opened and prepared for the public and securely closed at the end of the day.
● Accessibility Support: Operate the golf cart and handicapped lift to assist guests with tours of the house and wing.
● Admissions & Reservations: Administer front-line policies for general, group, and special event admissions and sales.
● Facility Oversight: Oversee the daily maintenance and general cleanliness of public restrooms, the historic home, and the grounds.
● Supervision: Supervise volunteers during their scheduled shifts.
● Reporting: Prepare accurate daily admission and sales reports.
● Guest Relations: Provide preliminary information for potential donors and direct vendors or special guests as needed.
Museum Shop Operations
● Merchandising: Maintain the shop’s appearance, ensuring high standards for cleanliness and product presentation.
● Inventory Management: Receive, check in, and prepare new merchandise for display as it arrives from vendors.
● Sales Excellence: Use effective sales techniques to maximize revenue while communicating the relevance of products to the museum’s mission.
● Record-Keeping: Assist with inventory record-keeping and documentation as required.
Requirements & Qualifications
Physical Requirements
● Stamina: Ability to stand and remain active for extended periods throughout the workday.
● Strength: Ability to lift, carry, and move merchandise or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
● Mobility: Ability to operate a golf cart and assist guests with a handicapped lift.
● Environment: Ability to work in a combined indoor/outdoor environment as needed to oversee grounds and assist visitors.
Availability & Schedule
● Weekly Hours: Primarily seeking help on the weekends, specifically on Sundays, consisting of approximately 15-20 hours per week (some weekday hours will also be available).
● Standard Schedule: Must be available for a schedule of 2–3 days per week with preference for weekend work.
● Special Events: Must be available to work most special event days scheduled throughout the year.
Knowledge & Experience
● Historical Knowledge: A strong interest in or knowledge of Thomas Jefferson, his era, and local history.
● Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to answer guest questions about the museum and surrounding area.
● Retail/Service: Previous experience in retail sales, customer service, or hospitality is preferred.
