Job Description and Duties

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER II – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT / REDWOODS COAST SECTOR / SUE-MEG STATE PARK MAINTENANCE SHOP

This classification is subject to the Post and Bid process. Applications from a certification list, transfer change in class, reinstatement, re-employment, and training and development assignment candidates will be accepted for this position but consistent with the MOU/Bargaining Agreement BU12/13 contract cannot be acted upon unless the Post & Bid process does not result in a hire.

The Park Maintenance Worker II reporting location is 4150 Patrick’s Point Drive, Trinidad, 95570 at SUE-MEG STATE PARK MAINTENANCE SHOP. This position will work under the direction of the Park Maintenance Supervisor.

This position has shared responsibility for maintenance and housekeeping functions and will work with and provide lead direction to permanent and seasonal maintenance staff maintaining and improving land, structures, and facilities at Sue-meg State Park, Trinidad State Beach, Humboldt Lagoons State Park, Harry A. Merlo State Recreation Area, Azalea State Reserve, Fort Humboldt State Historic Park, and other park units within the Redwood Coast Sector South as assigned. This position performs skilled structural and system maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, painting, roofing, welding, light and heavy equipment operation, and other maintenance duties as required. The position leads and coordinates subordinate staff in troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of park facilities, park water and sewer systems, campsites, park roads, park trails, electrical systems, and propane systems. Administrative duties include assisting with purchasing and procurement, regulatory compliance documentation, MAXIMO data collection and entry, work planning, project coordination, safety meetings, training of subordinate staff, and other responsibilities as assigned. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with strong trade skills, leadership abilities, and a solid work ethic to work with a great team in a wild and beautiful setting on California’s rugged north coast.

Work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Working Conditions

Typical work activities involve frequent periods of bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy objects and equipment. The incumbent performs indoor and outdoor work in a wide variety of weather conditions including rain, heat, cold, wind, and high humidity. Work may occur on uneven terrain, steep slopes, remote locations, around heavy equipment, and near roadways, waterways, trees, and construction zones. The position may involve exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, chemicals, poison oak, insects, loud noises, hazardous materials, and unpleasant odors. The incumbent may be required to work weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency call-outs, and irregular shifts in support of park operations.

Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee receives a temporary reduction in pay in exchange for PLP 2025 leave credits. The percentage of the temporary salary reduction and the number of PLP 2025 leave credits are determined by the position’s assigned bargaining unit.
