Primary Responsibility: Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work to enforce the laws-Local, State and Federal-and to safeguard the lives, property and rights of the residents and visitors of Gilpin County. Work involves responding to complaint calls, investigating crimes, mediating civil disputes, preparing reports and patrolling the County in an official vehicle to deter crime or apprehend violators or suspects, enforcing traffic laws, investigating motor vehicle accidents, collecting and submitting evidence related to crimes, and testifying in court.

Main Job Duties:

Responds to complaint calls such as: assaults, burglaries, traffic offenses, larceny (theft), domestic disputes, alarms, etc. Investigates felonies, misdemeanors and petty offense crimes.

Provides assistance to other deputies and other law enforcement agencies within Gilpin County and surrounding counties, as required.

Interviews witnesses. Gathers and labels evidence, interviews and interrogates suspects and makes arrests.
-
Patrols Gilpin County in an official vehicle to enforce and maintain law and order, maintaining high visibility. Inspects troublesome areas, checks security of business establishments within unincorporated Gilpin County and Central City and conducts additional patrols of residences as requested by homeowners.

Examines crime scenes to determine nature of law violations. Secures and protects crime scenes and assists investigators as requested. Conducts surveillance of specific areas when assigned.

Mediates and keeps the peace during civil disputes.

Utilizes computerized data entry equipment, various word processing and database programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information.

Assists in the Detention Facility, Dispatch and/or courts when needed.

Serves civil paperwork.

Investigate Motor Vehicle Accidents within the city limits of Central City.

Conduct Forest Service patrols as assigned.

Respond to back country rescues.

Complete VIN inspections for residents.

Prepares a variety of reports related to criminal and civil cases including documenting locations of incidents and information on victims, suspects and other individuals. Prepares and submits daily activity reports to Sergeants.

Operates 800 and VHF radios to receive and send information to Communications, deputies and other emergency service agencies.

Calls for, or responds to, agency assists where needed.

Enforces state and county traffic laws and provides traffic control where needed.

Locates and takes persons into custody on arrest warrants. Makes arrests based on probable cause and warrants. Identifies, collects and secures evidence or other property for safekeeping.

Appears in court as a witness to give testimony.

Cooperates with law enforcement officers from other governmental agencies in investigations and arrests.

Safely operates a county vehicle in normal and emergency conditions.

Maintains cleanliness of assigned workstation, patrol vehicle, uniform and weapons.

Provides basic medical attention in emergencies, including CPR and First Aid, as required.

Maintains office proficiency standards in the use of firearms, tasers and other assigned equipment.
Additional Job Duties:

Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by Patrol Sergeants, Division Chiefs, Undersheriff or Sheriff and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.

Education: High School graduate or equivalent, or any combination of education and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the job.

Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License without any restriction due to driving record. Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.

Is a Colorado Certified Peace Officer, or has all requirements necessary for, and nothing that would prevent, such certification within 30 days of employment, from an approved Colorado POST Academy.

Benefits for Full Time Employees:
Paid Holidays: Gilpin County provides 13 paid holidays per calendar year. An employee will be paid ten (10) hours per holiday.
Vacation: The first year of employment, (based on the anniversary of the hire date) full-time employees are given 40 hours of vacation and earn 3 hours of paid vacation leave bi-weekly. After that time, leave shall accrue as follows:

Full-Time employees are encouraged to take their earned vacation leave each year. Vacation time accrual shall cap at the maximum amount and shall not exceed the maximum accrual amount, based on total months of service.
Sick Leave: Full-Time employees shall accrue four (4) hours of sick leave each bi-weekly pay period. The maximum sick leave that may be accumulated by such an employee is 600 hours.
Personal Leave: Full time employees will receive 30 hours of personal leave per year. Personal time cannot be rolled over to the following year and will not be paid out. Personal time will be added to employees balance the first pay period of the new year. Employees hired throughout the year will receive personal time on a pro-rated basis, based on the quarter year that they are hired. Q1 30 hours, Q2 22.5 hours, Q3 15 hours, Q4 7.5 hours. Personal time terminates on December 31, 2025.
Medical Plans: Gilpin County offers two medical plans with Kaiser and United Health Care. Gilpin County offers a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) for all employees to cover co-pays, deductibles, and other medical expenses. Employees are eligible for benefits the first of the month following 30 days of service. This HRA card will have $3,000.00 on it for an individual or $6,000.00 for a family. Both plans have a max out of pocket for $1,000 individual or $2,000 per family after the use of the HRA card for in network expenses.

Dental Plan: Gilpin County offers dental coverage through Delta Dental with PPO and Premiere network coverages. Individual deductible at $50 and family deductible at $150. In network coverage for preventative and diagnostic services are covered 100%, basic services covered at 80%, major services at 50%, and ortho covered at 50% with a $2,000 max. The plan offers a “Right Start 4 Kids” plan that covers children up to their 13th birthday at 100% with no deductible. Annual max this plan pays for covered dental services is $2,000 per individual covered on the plan.

Vision Plan: Gilpin County offers vision coverage through VSP. In network coverage includes copays at $10 copays with an allowance of $175 per pair of either one prescription eyeglasses or contacts yearly on a 12-month calendar basis and discounts on Lasik.

Retirement: Two retirement savings plans are available through the Colorado Retirement Association: 401(a) and 457 Deferred Compensation Plans
- The 401(a) has a 5% required full match with a 4-year vesting period.
- The 457 Plan is optional and has Pre-tax and Roth Options available. After four years of service, this plan could also include a County match as described below.

Effective July 8, 2025, for all new employees hired on or after this date, the graduated vesting schedule for the 5% match on employees’ 401(a) plan is as follows:

Short-Term Disability: Short-term disability pays 60% of your earnings with a max of $1,000 per week for up to 11 weeks. Benefits begin on day 15 and your first two weeks you will have to cover with sick or vacation time.
Long-Term Disability: Long-term disability kicks in after 90 consecutive calendar days of a qualified disability. The plan will pay 60% of your earnings with a max of $5,000 monthly.
