REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
OPTION A
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field -AND- Three (3) years of professional level experience in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related program at the level of Safety Assistant.
OPTION B
Five (5) years’ experience at a professional level in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related program responsibilities in a large department at the level of Safety Assistant.
OPTION C
One (1) years' experience as head of a comprehensive occupational safety and accident prevention program in a department.
A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Closely related field is defined as a science or engineering-based degree that provides coursework relevant to occupational safety, health, or environmental protection, including but not limited to: Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Industrial Engineering, and Environmental and Occupational Health.
Professional is defined as work experience gained in a professional occupation or classification subsequent to receiving a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Experience at the level of a Safety Assistant in the service of the County of Los Angeles is defined as assisting in planning, conducting, coordinating, evaluating and maintaining a comprehensive occupational, environmental, and automotive safety program in a large department. You may still qualify even if your job title isn't exactly the same as the one listed. What matters is that your experience is at a similar level - meaning your job involves similar responsibilities, requires comparable skills and knowledge, and takes place within a similar organizational structure. Please provide a clear explanation of your experience to demonstrate that it is at the appropriate level.
Closely related program is defined as a program that supports or focuses on preventing workplace injury, illness, and fatality.
Large department is defined as having 1,000 or more employees.
Head is defined as the senior professional who directs, plans, and manages workplace safety policies, risk reduction strategies, and regulatory compliance to protect workers and prevent injuries.
WITHHOLD INFORMATION
No withhold will be allowed. Required experience/education must be fully met by the last day of filing and clearly indicated on the application.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
