Full Job Description

Position Summary: The Certified Peer Specialist for the Access Clinic South is a bilingual (English/Spanish) person who has lived the experience of mental health, substance use or co-occurring needs, is in recovery, has had formal State of Wisconsin Peer Specialist training in the peer specialist model of support, and has passed the State of Wisconsin certification exam or successfully becomes certified within one year of hire.

The role of the Certified Peer Specialist within the Access Clinic South is to be a mentor or coach in providing support to adults who have mental health and substance use or co-occurring needs. The Peer Specialist is responsible for support, education and mentoring adults who are involved with Access Clinic South and other locations as needed or requested by Milwaukee County. The Certified Peer Specialist through their lived recovery experience, provides the guidance and role modeling necessary to promote wellness, purpose in life, develop relationships, and the insight necessary to move forward.

Essential Functions:

· From a recovery perspective, provide a strength-based review of an individual's abilities, strengths, and assets. Assist in developing goals/plans.

· Encourage the development of a symptom management "toolkit" for individuals providing recovery-based education and support.

· Encourage individuals to become the expert of their own lived experiences and develop voice and choice around service participation to be empowered in their recovery.

· Support people in navigating systems of care and encourage the individual to communicate with other services providers to allow for maximum self-determination and dignity in care.

· Research and identify appropriate resources for individuals.

· Responsible for accurate documentation and maintaining case files as required by agency policy and DHS 34 regulations as needed.

· Responsible for accurate documentation and maintaining up to date crisis progress notes, including crisis plans in the Behavioral Health Division Electronic Health Record system (Avatar) as required.

· Completion of 1:1 clinical supervision for 1 hour per week (if required).

· Collaborate with the individuals team including collateral and community support to promote continuity of care with written and explicit consent to support their recovery journey.

· Participate in community visits with the adult as necessary to engage him or her in the recovery process.

· Assist adults in their process of stabilization and recovery.

· Provide educational support and interactions individually and in groups.

· Facilitate psychosocial or other self-help, recovery-based groups to engage adult in recognizing and understanding early triggers or needs and assist in the development of prevention strategies.

· Utilize motivational interviewing, active listening and utilize positive communication skills.

· Attend and participate in staff meetings.

· Attend in-service training and conferences as required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Other job-related duties as may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

2. Other duties will be determined by the supervisor.

Work Relationships and Scope: Has contact with a wide variety of individuals including case managers, therapists, treatment teams, educational staff, families, and community resources.

Personal Attributes: Follow agency Code of Conduct; adhere to established policies and procedures of the agency and of all funding sources; conduct self in an ethical manner; maintain professional and respectful relationships with program staff, other WCS staff, individuals receiving services and all external persons and agencies involved with service provision; sensitivity toward cultural, ethnic and disability needs; demonstrate commitment to agency values and mission.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good computer skills; accurate documentation; ability to meet deadlines; knowledge of substance use issues and mental health needs.

Working Conditions: Work is performed at the Behavioral Health Division offices or OCA program-specific site in the community. Community outreach is based on individual circumstances, at individual homes or residences and community agencies. Hours of work will be during regular business hours but will vary depending on the assigned service area and/or program needs and will average 20 hours/week for part-time and 40 hours/week for full-time positions. Flexibility of hours is required based on service needs.

Physical Demands: Based on program area, position is mobile with time spent in the community, including home visits, community interactions, and in the BHD offices; driving throughout Milwaukee County; must be able to go up and down stairs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Minimal Qualifications:

High school or GED/HSED required; Bilingual (English/Spanish) required to meet the cultural and linguistic needs of the individuals seeking services via Access Clinic South; graduate of state Certified Peer Specialist training; possess current Certified Peer Specialist certification; (If such certification has not occurred by hire, state certification must occur within the first year of employment.); good written and verbal communication skills. Personal experience with mental health and/or substance use and knowledge of recovery principles. Meet all WCS and contractor requirements for criminal and caregiver background, driver’s record, and reference checks. Valid driver’s license, automobile, and sufficient insurance to meet agency requirements is preferred.
