Job Summary
Works under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Assistant Manager and general direction of the Laboratory Director.Responsible for performing successful venipunctures and capillary punctures on patients of all ages. Duties also include CLIA-waived testing, clerical duties, and other nonprofessional duties as assigned. Responsible for providing excellence to our customersat all times.
Responsibilities
Receives outpatients and processes non-standing and standing orders accurately.
Works with patients varying in age and health status and appropriately interacts and chooses appropriate equipment.
Collect blood sample from patients successfully while adhering to Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
Deciphers the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient (capillary, venipuncture, winged, syringe, etc.).
Practices proper positive patient identification for collecting laboratory samples.
Labels specimen containers accurately with minimum patient identifiers, dates, and initials.
Practices infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment.
Transports all specimen samples using universal and standard precautions.
Appropriately collects chain of custody samples (including observed collections) and accurately processes the samples for shipment.
Performs CLIA-waived testing accurately using proper laboratory protocol.
Maintains a well-organized phlebotomy cart and draw station at all times and both are stocked for next shift.
Attends meetings as required and in-services.
Appropriately responds to requests (as assigned) from management with a positive attitude in an accurate and timely manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working irregular hours. Physically demanding, high-stress environment. Pushing and pulling heavy objects. Full range of body motion including handling and helping lift patients.
Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry. Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing.
1 year experience in phlebotomy preferred.
Education
- Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program (Required)
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Credentials
- American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (Required) Certified in phlebotomy or lab assistant by a nationally recognized agency (i.e. NHA, ASPT, ASCP, or AMT)Certified in phlebotomy or lab assistant by a nationally recognized agency (i.e. NHA, ASPT, ASCP, or AMT)
