Quality & Project Manager – ASME Pipe & Pressure Vessel FabricationPosition Summary
Our client is a specialized stainless steel and alloy fabrication company serving industrial markets including chemical processing, water treatment, pulp and paper, mining, energy, and related industries.
The company manufactures custom process piping systems, pipe spools, fittings, pressure vessels, and process equipment where welding quality, material traceability, and ASME compliance are critical to success. While much of the current work involves industrial piping and process systems, the company is continuing to grow its ASME pressure vessel work.
Reporting to the General Manager, this role serves as a key resource for quality, fabrication, and project execution. The successful candidate will help maintain ASME quality and code-compliance programs while working closely with shop personnel, engineering, management, customers, and project stakeholders to support efficient, high-quality fabrication.
This is a quality-first role, but not a quality-only role. The position includes responsibility for welding documentation, code compliance, material traceability, shop-floor quality support, and selected project management responsibilities.
This is not a desk-only quality position. The ideal candidate is comfortable reviewing code documentation and quality records, but also enjoys being on the shop floor, working with welders and production personnel, answering technical questions, identifying potential issues early, and helping work move through the shop efficiently and correctly.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and support ASME/NBIC quality systems, procedures, records, and code documentation.
- Administer WPS, PQR, WPQ, and welder qualification records.
- Support compliance with ASME Section IX, ASME B31.3/B31.1, NBIC, and applicable Section VIII requirements.
- Review drawings, specifications, fabrication packages, MTRs, material certifications, and quality records.
- Maintain material identification and traceability throughout fabrication.
- Coordinate inspections, NDE, pressure testing, customer inspections, and Authorized Inspector activities.
- Support preparation of code documentation and final turnover packages.
- Maintain a visible presence on the shop floor and serve as a technical resource for welders, fitters, inspectors, production personnel, and project stakeholders.
- Help identify welding, fabrication, material, inspection, and documentation issues before they become nonconformances or project delays.
- Support quality practices for welded pipe, fittings, flanges, spools, pressure-boundary components, and custom fabricated assemblies.
- Manage selected fabrication projects and customer orders from award through completion.
- Coordinate quality, engineering, production, scheduling, purchasing, customer requirements, and final documentation for assigned projects.
- Support continuous improvement in quality, productivity, documentation, and shop-floor execution.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in fabrication quality, welding quality, code compliance, project management, project coordination, or a closely related role within an industrial fabrication environment.
- Experience with industrial pipe fabrication, pipe spooling, fittings fabrication, process piping, pressure vessel fabrication, custom process equipment, or other ASME code fabrication.
- Strong working knowledge of ASME Section IX and welding qualification requirements.
- Working knowledge of ASME B31.3 and/or B31.1, with familiarity with ASME Section VIII, Division 1.
- Experience with WPS, PQR, WPQ, welder qualification records, fabrication quality documentation, material traceability, and MTR review.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, piping drawings, specifications, weld details, and manufacturing documentation.
- Ability to work effectively with welders, fitters, inspectors, production personnel, engineering, customers, and project stakeholders.
- Comfortable being active on the shop floor and involved in day-to-day fabrication quality and production support.
Education & Experience
Candidates will be considered based on a combination of formal education, technical training, and directly relevant on-the-job experience. A degree is not required; however, education in welding, mechanical, metallurgical, manufacturing, or engineering-related fields is valued where it supports the technical requirements of the role.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
- Experience supporting both process piping and pressure vessel fabrication projects.
- Experience with ASME B31.3 process piping and ASME Section VIII, Division 1 fabrication.
- Familiarity with NBIC / National Board requirements.
- Experience working with Authorized Inspectors.
- Experience managing fabrication projects or customer orders from kickoff through completion.
- Experience with stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, nickel alloys, Alloy 20, AL6XN, Hastelloy, Inconel, or other corrosion-resistant alloy fabrication.
- Experience coordinating NDE, pressure testing, audits, and customer inspections.
Beneficial Qualifications
- ASNT Level II or III certification.
- National Board Commission or Authorized Inspector experience.
- Welding engineering, metallurgical troubleshooting, corrosion analysis, or weld failure investigation experience.
- Fabrication estimating experience.
- ERP/MRP, document-control system, or CAD familiarity.
Pay is expected to be between $72,500 - $85,000 DOE. Employer is willing to consider and train well qualified applicants who might not meet all qualification.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a practical, hands-on fabrication professional who understands that quality and compliance are essential parts of successful project execution. They enjoy being involved in day-to-day shop operations and working with the team to help ensure work is completed efficiently, correctly, and in accordance with applicable requirements.
The most successful candidate will be viewed as a trusted technical resource rather than simply a compliance administrator. This role is well suited for someone who values variety, enjoys learning new aspects of the business, and wants the opportunity to contribute beyond a narrowly defined quality role.
