Full Job Description

The Emergency Department Tech/Clerk, under direction and supervision of licensed nursing staff, medical staff, and/or Nurse Manager, contributes to patient care by performing clerical and non-professional tasks directly and indirectly related to patient care and Emergency Department unit functioning. The Emergency Department Technician will function as support for the nursing and medical team responding to the needs of patients of any age-including neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric within the scope of their practice and competence.

Qualifications:

High School Graduate or Equivalent;
CNA, MA, EMT preferred, but on the job training will be provided in practices and procedures of Orchard Hospital;
Minimum one year experience in healthcare setting preferred;
Must be able to read and write English.
Current BLS Certificate.
Current CNA, MA, or EMT certificate in good standing preferred;

Job Requirements:

Assist with patient preparation for exam by obtaining vital signs and initiating monitoring as directed by the primary care nurse and assisting with the removal of patient's clothing and gowning of patients.
Maintains a clean, orderly unit and efficient clinical area by assisting with and promoting workflow, maintaining stock of forms/supplies and room turn-over as indicated;
Document patient's findings legibly and accurately, and in a timely manner in the patient record. Reports to the nurse or provider any acute findings requiring immediate interventions; observe and report to nursing staff, documents patient response to treatments and procedures according to policy and procedure.
Rounds/Answers call lights promptly and refer questions or problems to nursing/medical staff; assist with procedures as competent and as needed and as directed by the licensed staff, and indicated to support nursing unit.
Identifies opportunities to meet the learning needs of patient and family, overcoming identified barriers to learning; demonstrating knowledge of functional and developmental age in delivery of care and acts as the patient's advocate, ensuring patient rights and intervening when necessary to assure those rights are preserved.
Assist with transporting of patients between nursing units and diagnostic areas of the facility to assist nursing units.
Aid the nursing staff in providing for comfort needs of the patient; assisting CNAs and licensed staff; assists in retrieving patients from vehicles as indicated as well as escorting visitors to and fro patient care cares;
Perform technical skills within scope of practice and competence, and administers treatments and procedures according to physician's orders as directed by the licensed nurse.
- Securing ancillary services of lab, x-ray and cardiopulmonary as directed by the Licensed Nurse.
- Vital Signs and other systems monitoring set up as directed and competent,
- Finger stick specimen collection and use of glucometer with deemed competence,
- Specimen collection and delivery to laboratory as directed,
- Assisting with splinting as directed and competent,
- Understands sterile technique, sets up and assists with wound care, sets up room and patient for RN/MD exam,
- Suture set-up and wound irrigation as directed and competent,
- Assisting with NG tube and other tube/device placement as directed,
- Answering of telephones and managing calls appropriately,
- Public Relations and rounding in the waiting room per policy and procedure,
- Document patient information correctly and legible in Emergency Department log.
Demonstrates proficiency navigating through Orchard Hospital Health Information Systems (HIS) including Chart Access, LabDaq, T-System, Radiology Information System, ELearning, and Orchard Hospital Policies and Procedures - obtaining diagnostic test results, accessing information from previous hospital visits and locating policy and procedures.
Demonstrates effective communication with members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes; attends and participates in all required in-service training and mandatory meetings (75% staff meetings per policy).

Schedule: Full Time - 36, Nights, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday, alternating with Thursday, Friday, & Saturday
