Executive Director

Well-established, multi-site behavioral health nonprofit serving the greater Charleston area. Must include resume and cover letter.

Position Overview

A well-established, multi-site behavioral health nonprofit in the greater Charleston area is seeking an experienced Executive Director to lead the organization’s operations, strategy, fiscal stewardship, and community impact. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will guide the organization in advancing its mission, strengthening its programs and partnerships, and ensuring sustainable, high-quality services across multiple community-based facilities.

This exempt leadership position oversees a multi-million-dollar annual operating budget and requires a mission-driven, ethical, and collaborative executive who can balance strategic vision with hands-on organizational management.

Minimum Qualifications

· Master’s degree in a human service-related field, business administration, public administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Minimum of five years of managerial experience, including at least three years of supervisory experience.

· Demonstrated ability to lead complex nonprofit, behavioral health, human services, or community-based organizations.

· Experience managing budgets, contracts, compliance requirements, and relationships with public and private funding sources.

· Ability to use current technology and software to support organizational administration, reporting, communication, and service delivery.

Key Leadership ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership

· Work with the Board of Directors to define, communicate, and advance the organization’s mission, vision, goals, and ethical values.

· Articulate a clear strategic vision and motivate staff, partners, and stakeholders to support organizational priorities.

· Oversee the development and execution of organization-wide strategies that promote quality, innovation, accountability, and consumer responsiveness.

· Develop formal and informal information networks to support timely decision-making and organizational awareness.

· Provide the Board with regular organizational report cards that measure progress against strategic planning priorities.

Fiscal and Business Administration

· Manage the organization’s financial operations and oversee a multi-million-dollar annual operating budget.

· Develop and manage an annual budget that anticipates organizational needs and supports long-term sustainability.

· Coordinate and serve as liaison with federal, state, local, and other funding sources.

· Provide regular financial status reports to the Board of Directors.

· Ensure fiscal affairs are managed in accordance with responsible accounting practices, legal requirements, and applicable policies.

Organizational Management and Design

· Design and maintain an effective organizational structure that supports quality services, innovation, accountability, and responsiveness to consumers and the community.

· Conduct and use analysis of organizational strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to guide planning and improvement.

· Delegate effectively, empower staff, and demonstrate strong leadership of executive and management teams.

· Coordinate partnerships and serve as liaison with agencies at the state, regional, and community levels.

· Ensure the organization maintains required accreditation, licensure, compliance standards, and safety practices.

Business Development and Contract Management

· Maintain current service delivery contracts and ensure contractual obligations are met.

· Identify, negotiate, and secure additional service delivery contracts that align with the organization’s mission and capacity.

· Strengthen partnerships with employers, funders, agencies, referral sources, and community stakeholders.

Employee Assistance Program Policy, Consultation, and Training

· Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Employee Assistance Program philosophy, policy needs, consultation practices, and training requirements.

· Provide timely and effective consultation specific to identified organizational, employer, or employee needs.

· Facilitate policy and procedure development that supports effective EAP service delivery.

· Provide professional training tailored to identified needs and audiences.

Marketing, Communications, and Community Engagement

· Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for communicating and competing effectively within the behavioral health and human services environment.

· Represent the organization at external events and activities that promote organizational goals and strengthen community presence.

· Communicate the agency’s vision and mission clearly to staff, partners, funders, employers, and the broader community.

Additional Responsibilities

· Perform additional duties customary to the role of Executive Director as designated by the Board of Directors.

· Adhere to all safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

· Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, ethical conduct, and sound judgment in all organizational matters.

Work Schedule

This is an exempt, full-time position working primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours. Evening and weekend availability may be required to meet organizational, community, Board, or program needs.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a strategic, financially responsible, mission-centered leader with the ability to build trust with the Board, staff, funders, employers, community partners, and the individuals served by the organization. The Executive Director must be comfortable operating in a complex, competitive environment while maintaining a clear commitment to ethical leadership, quality services, organizational sustainability, and community impact. Pay will be commiserate with experience.

Pay: From $100,000.00 per year
