Full Job Description

Position Overview

A boutique law firm in downtown Hattiesburg serving clients in Estate Planning, Medicaid Planning, Medicaid Applications for Long Term Care, and Social Security disability matters is seeking a personable, dependable, self-directed, and highly detail-oriented individual to serve as a Medicaid and Trust Funding Clerk.

The position involves gathering, reviewing, organizing, and tracking financial documents and other information needed for Medicaid applications and trust funding. The selected candidate will also communicate regularly with clients, family members, financial institutions, and other professionals.

Strong math and numerical skills are required.

No prior legal, paralegal, Medicaid, trust, or estate-planning experience is required. We will train the right person.

Schedule

Part-time employment is preferred, generally approximately 20–30 hours per week. Full-time employment may be considered for an especially strong candidate.

The schedule may be flexible, but the employee must maintain dependable weekly hours agreed upon in advance. The hours do not have to be identical each day, but regular availability during normal business hours is required.

This is an in-office position in downtown Hattiesburg.

Responsibilities

Request and follow up on financial records and other documents needed from clients.
Organize bank statements, income records, retirement statements, insurance documents, property records, and other financial information.
Compare balances, deposits, withdrawals, dates, account information, and other figures.
Perform basic calculations and verify information for accuracy.
Identify missing documents, discrepancies, and information that does not match.
Enter information accurately into spreadsheets, forms, checklists, and the firm’s case-management system.
Assist with Medicaid application documents and trust-funding checklists.
Track outstanding documents, deadlines, and follow-up tasks.
Communicate with clients and family members in a warm, patient, and professional manner.
Contact banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, and other offices to request information or check the status of documents.
Prepare organized information for attorney review.
Maintain accurate and confidential electronic and paper files.

Required Qualifications

Strong organization and consistent follow-through.
The ability to manage unfinished tasks and move assigned work forward without repeated reminders.

Patience when working with elderly clients, individuals with disabilities, and family members.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Comfort using computers, spreadsheets, email, PDF documents, and online systems.

The judgment to recognize when a matter should be brought to an attorney or supervisor.

Math or Financial Aptitude

Applicants should have demonstrated strength in mathematics, finance, accounting, or detailed numerical work.

This ability may come from classes, training, work experience, or demonstrated natural ability. Relevant backgrounds may include mathematics, accounting, finance, banking, bookkeeping, payroll, billing, insurance, economics, business, or work involving spreadsheets and financial records.

A college degree is not required.

Legal Experience

Legal or paralegal experience is not required.

The firm will provide training in Medicaid document collection, trust-funding support, office procedures, client communication, financial-record organization, and case-management systems.

The employee will not provide legal advice or independently make Medicaid eligibility, trust-planning, or other legal decisions.

Compensation

$13.00–$15.00 per hour, depending on demonstrated numerical ability, qualifications, training, experience, availability, and overall fit for the position.
