Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) is a branch of engineering that deals with mitigating tasks associated with new infrastructure design and construction. SUE works closely with engineers and utility owners to help identify utility conflicts using an array of technologies, including electromagnetic line locators, ground-penetrating radar, GPS, conventional survey, and vacuum excavation. The work requires a high level of precision and technical ability.
WEI is seeking a SUE Technician for our Raleigh, NC office. The position requires a person who is thorough, self-directed, and having sound interpersonal skills to build and maintain professional relationships at all organization levels. Salary based on education and experience - from $37,500 to $55,000 per year.

Key Responsibilities
- Designate existing utilities using electromagnetic and geophysical technologies
- Provide accurate measurements for utilities in project limits
- Provide accurate field drawings and sketches
- Read and interpret utility records, as-built and survey drawings, and highway design plans
- Operate a vacuum excavation truck and perform test holes to expose utilities
- Work with a team of talented individuals to help tackle a wide variety of projects
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to lift and move heavy equipment with ease
- Ability to work outside with minimal problems
- Ability to walk long distances of several miles daily
- Ability to prioritize the safety of yourself and others
- Assist and coordinate with Project Manager/staff with tasks related to a variety of projects

- Capacity to read, comprehend and communicate at a high level
- Capacity to quickly grasp new technologies
- Capacity to exercise judgment in making preliminary selections and adaptations of alternatives
- Demonstrate strong technical measurement skills
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2 plus years’ experience in utility location and designating
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle record
Must be willing to travel as necessary to various job sites. Fieldwork includes exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
