Construction Controller – Residential Construction / Homebuilding

LND Homes
Winston-Salem, NC 27106

Salary Range:
$110,000 to $145,000 (DOE)

We are seeking an experienced Construction Accounting Controller with strong residential construction, homebuilding, and ERP experience to oversee the accounting and financial operations of a growing high-end homebuilding company.

This role requires someone who understands construction accounting from the ground up, including job costing, construction draws, lien documentation, AP, AR, payroll, ERP systems, and clean monthly and year-end financial reporting. The ideal candidate is not only accurate and detail-oriented, but also able to provide clear, number-specific direction to ownership and management.

This position is intended for someone who can grow with the company and potentially develop into a Chief Financial Officer role.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee the company’s full accounting cycle, including month-end close, year-end close, reconciliations, reporting, and financial statement preparation.
Maintain clean, consistent, and exact monthly financials that allow ownership to clearly understand company performance.
Manage and improve job costing processes, including cost codes, budgets, committed costs, actual costs, variance reporting, and profitability tracking by job.
Prepare, review, and analyze job cost reports to help management understand where each project stands financially.
Provide number-specific guidance to ownership and leadership about job profitability, cash flow, budget concerns, overhead, margins, and financial trends.
Manage construction draws, including draw schedules, documentation, supporting invoices, lien waivers, lender requirements, and related reporting.
Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring accurate coding, timely processing, and proper documentation.
Manage payroll accounting and related reporting, including accurate labor costing to jobs when applicable.
Maintain and improve accounting systems, workflows, and internal controls.
Use ERP software effectively, preferably with experience in ECI MarkSystems or a similar construction/homebuilding ERP platform.
Ensure that the ERP system is being used properly for job costing, purchasing, invoicing, budgeting, reporting, and fiscal management.
Work closely with project managers, purchasing, operations, and ownership to ensure financial data is accurate, prompt, and useful.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and long-term financial strategy.
Support year-end reporting, CPA coordination, tax preparation support, insurance audits, and other financial compliance needs.
Help create scalable financial processes as the company continues to grow.

Required Experience and Qualifications

Strong accounting experience in residential construction, custom homebuilding, or a closely related construction environment.
Solid understanding of job costing, construction draws, lien waivers, AP, AR, payroll, and project-based financial reporting.
Experience with ERP systems needed; experience with ECI MarkSystems or a similar construction-specific ERP system is strongly preferred.
Ability to produce clean, consistent, and correct monthly and year-end financial reports.
Strong understanding of construction budgets, cost codes, committed costs, work in progress, gross margin, overhead, and job profitability.
Ability to analyze financial information and explain what the numbers mean in a clear, practical way.
Strong Excel and reporting skills.
High attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through.
Ability to work directly with ownership and provide honest, specific financial guidance.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with both accounting and operations teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience with a custom homebuilder or residential construction company.
Experience helping improve accounting systems, reporting processes, ERP workflows, or job cost structures.
Experience supporting banking relationships, lender draws, CPA relationships, insurance audits, and strategic financial planning.
Prior Controller, Senior Construction Accountant, Accounting Manager, or Finance Manager experience within a construction company.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on construction accounting professional who understands that accurate numbers drive better business decisions. This person should be comfortable managing daily accounting details while also stepping back to advise ownership on cash flow, job profitability, financial risk, and growth strategy.

We are looking for someone who can bring structure, consistency, and clarity to the financial side of the business and grow into a higher-level financial leadership role over time.

Pay: $110,000.00 - $145,000.00 per year
