Full Job Description

Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities or special needs. This position involves providing compassionate care and support in various settings, including at an employment setting (horticulture business in the Keaau Business Park), in the community, and at home. The DSP will assist clients with learning and mastering job related tasks, daily living activities, promote independence, social integration, and ensure a safe and nurturing environment. Job assignments are mainly available in the week day mornings and early afternoons at Keaau Business Park, and possibly expand to the weekends in Hilo or Puna areas.

Duties (in the agriculture /work related setting)

Process tropical flowers and foliage - harvest, trim, clean, and prepare for shipments.
Field maintenance - weed and remove overgrown flowers and foliage.
Wash and pack flowers to meet agricultural inspection standards.
Create packing/shipping materials - roll and shred newspapers, set up shipping boxes.
Provide guidance to clients to adopt/acquire job skills mentioned above (hard skills) and other soft skills (interpersonal/emotion regulation).
Monitor and document client performance and their physical/behavioral well-being using a computer reporting program.
Anticipate and prevent client's negative behaviors due to environmental or personal triggers.

Duties (general)

Implement individualized care plans tailored to the specific needs of each client.
Facilitate social interactions and community engagement to enhance appropriate social skills and social integration.
Provide transportation to and from client's home base to access community resources.
Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living/Independent Living skills such as meal preparation, household chores, or budgeting.
Monitor and document daily activities and report any changes in client condition to supervisors.

Requirements

High School diploma/equivalent or above, and be able to read and write standard English.
Must pass criminal background checks, APS/CAN registry checks, drug test, and not listed in the Federal/State Lists of Excluded Individuals.
TB clearance (at hire).
Certification in CPR/First Aid (at hire).
Good working attitude and willingness to work outdoor under sunny, rainy, or hot/wet environments.
Computer/typing skills, ability to access and use computer programs and/or phone apps.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work and provide guidance effectively with individuals with different ranges of abilities.
Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients, families, and team members.
Ability to lift/move 35 lbs packages.
A compassionate attitude towards individuals with disabilities or special needs.
Have own car and is familiar with Hilo/Puna roads, with current auto insurance, registration, and safety check.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving abstract.
Efficient in completing assigned tasks with a tight deadline.
Experience in direct support, home care, teaching, or related fields is preferred.
Experience in horticulture/gardening/use of landscaping tools preferred.
