Position Summary
KLI Shell Lumber & Hardware is seeking a dependable, customer-focused Lumber Associate to join our team in Key Largo. The Lumber Associate is responsible for providing excellent customer service, assisting customers with lumber and building material selections, maintaining inventory and merchandising standards, safely handling and cutting lumber, and keeping the lumber yard clean, organized, and safe.
This is a hands-on position that requires strong customer service skills, product knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in a fast-paced retail and lumber yard environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Greet and assist customers throughout the lumber department and yard, providing friendly, professional, and knowledgeable service.
- Help customers identify and select lumber, plywood, mouldings, building materials, and related products based on their project needs.
- Explain product features, uses, and benefits and recommend appropriate products and add-on items.
- Process customer sales, invoices, and other transactions using the store's point-of-sale system as assigned.
- Safely load lumber, building materials, and merchandise onto carts, trucks, trailers, and customer vehicles.
- Measure and cut lumber and other materials according to customer requirements using approved equipment and established safety procedures.
- Stock, down-stock, rotate, organize, and maintain lumber and building material inventory.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate low-stock and out-of-stock items to supervisors or purchasing personnel.
- Maintain attractive, organized, properly labeled, and safe merchandise displays.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment safely and in accordance with company procedures.
- Operate approved saws and cutting equipment after receiving appropriate training and authorization.
- Maintain a clean and safe lumber yard and work area, including sweeping, removing trash and debris, and keeping aisles and loading areas clear.
- Answer department telephone calls and assist customers with product and availability questions.
- Follow register opening and closing procedures when assigned.
- Assist with receiving, organizing, and moving incoming merchandise.
- Assist with store maintenance, construction, displays, and improvement projects as needed.
- Help train new Lumber Associates after demonstrating proficiency in the position.
- Follow all company safety policies, operating procedures, and equipment requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties safely and satisfactorily.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- Previous experience in lumber, building materials, hardware, construction, warehouse operations, or retail customer service is preferred.
- Familiarity with lumber dimensions, plywood, pressure-treated lumber, mouldings, fasteners, and general building materials is a plus.

- English required; bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver's license preferred or required based on assigned duties.
- Forklift certification preferred. Associates required to operate a forklift must successfully complete all required training and authorization before operating the equipment.

The Lumber Associate may be required to use or operate:
- Forklift
- Pallet jack
- Table and other approved saws

- Utility knife and multi-tool
- Crowbars
- Hand tools
- Material-handling equipment
- Point-of-sale equipment
- Communication devices
All equipment must be used in accordance with KLI Shell Lumber & Hardware safety policies and required training.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods; use hands and arms to handle merchandise and equipment; reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, push, and pull.
The employee must be able to frequently lift, carry, load, and/or move materials weighing up to 80 pounds, with appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment when required.
The position also requires adequate vision, depth perception, hearing, and spatial awareness to safely work around customers, vehicles, lumber, machinery, and material-handling equipment.

Work Environment
The Lumber Associate works in both indoor and outdoor areas and may be exposed to:
- Outdoor weather and changing temperatures
- Dust, sawdust, fumes, and airborne particles
- Wood splinters and rough building materials
- Moving vehicles and mechanical equipment
- Power tools and cutting equipment
- Moderate to occasionally elevated noise levels
- Fiberglass and other building materials
- Active loading and unloading areas
Employees are expected to follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
