WAGES: $29.60/HR.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police or designee, the Police Officer performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, and providing information and assistance to the public; performs related work as assigned.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service.
2. Patrols assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observe situations and deter crime by providing high visibility.
3. Enforces state, federal, and Tribal laws and ordinances; issues verbal warnings and citations; pursues and apprehends suspects and request assistance as required.
4. Investigates criminal activity and incidents as the assigned detective.

7. Enforces state, federal and tribal laws and ordinances; issues verbal warnings and citations; pursues and apprehends suspects and request assistance as required.
8. Investigates juvenile and designated adult criminal activity and incidents as the assigned detective.
9. Coordinates crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, overseeing collection and preservation of physical evidence.
10. Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations.
11. Prepares and documents cases, completes reports and records, and prepares and maintains other logs and records.
12. Transports criminals to the courts, hospitals and various other locations.
13. Serves civil papers to Tribal and County residents; researches and locates person to be served.
14. Serves as a team member in such special projects as drug enforcement, livestock investigations, boating regulation enforcement and tribal and federal resource protection enforcement.
15. Investigates traffic accidents and provides traffic and crowd control as necessary; participates in special details and assignments.
16. Rescue and Resource enforcement.
17. Retrieves, identifies and returns found property and/or evidence to owners.
18. Provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and requests additional response.
19. Provides information, directions, and other services and assistance to the public.
20. Coordinates with and serves as back-up to other law enforcement agencies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE):
- High School diploma or equivalent (GED), required.
- Must possess a current California Police Officer Standards and Training P.O.S.T. Certificate.
- Employee is required to bear and maintain proficient use of firearms.
- Must have a valid California driver’s license and be insurable to operate a tribal vehicle.
- Required to pass a background check and fingerprints, pursuant to HVT Title 30A.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology and concepts.
- Knowledge of techniques for dealing with people of all socio-economic levels under hostile and emergency situations.
- Knowledge of safety practices and precautions pertaining the work.
- Knowledge or experience in first aid methods and ability to apply them in the field.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex laws and procedures and policies.
- Ability to observe and accurately recall places, names, descriptive characteristics, and facts of incidents.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Employee is subject to an annual performance evaluation following a 12-month evaluation from hire date.
2. Position is considered safety sensitive and employee is subject to the Tribal Alcohol & Drug Policy including preemployment, random, post-accident (the employee will be automatically tested), reasonable cause and re-entry alcohol & drug testing.
3. Must possess a valid California driver license and be insurable in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Operator’s Policy of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. Employee is required to operate a government-owned or –leased motor vehicle in the performance of duties, thus requiring a valid driver license. Employee must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, as well as that of the Hoopa Valley Tribe.
4. Medical Requirements: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, or 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of this position are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to oneself or others is disqualifying.
5. In accordance with 25 CFR 12.32, officers employed with the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department must complete a background investigation no less stringent than required of a federal officer performing the same duties. Pursuant to Title 30A, a background investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a law enforcement background investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
6. Reasoning Ability:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
7. Work Environment: Characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate. The stress level in this work environment can often become stressful.
8. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
9. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
