Full Job Description

WEEKEND/OVERNIGHT VETERINARY TECHNICIAN (canine and feline) - duties in part:
Veterinary technicians must have a broad knowledge of animal science, terminology, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology and sufficient mathematical skills to ensure the administration of accurate drug and fluid doses. They must be able to successfully restrain animals, complete clinical laboratory tests, use multiple radiology techniques, administer and monitor animals under anesthesia, assist in surgery, use proper medical terminology when speaking and writing, maintain certifications, licenses, or registration, and perform dental procedures. Technicians must also maintain confidentiality, complete medical record management tasks, exam-room, nursing-care, client-interaction, and inventory management tasks as assigned. Follow established procedures, and operate within AAHA and OSHA standards. Other duties required, but not limited to, consist of providing patients with compassionate nursing care as well as maintaining a compassionate and professional environment for all clients and co-workers. .

General Knowledge
 Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it treats.
 Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
 Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.
 Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations.
 Use proper medical terminology when speaking and writing.
 Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission. Know the most common zoonotic diseases (infections from animals to humans).
 Competently speak and write the English language.
General Tasks
 Maintain a list of tasks and engage in productive work during slow periods.
 Maintain your personal veterinary technician certificate, license, or registration.
 Participate in your performance appraisal, and, as requested, in those of others.
 Participate in all staff and training meetings.
 Keep up with new developments in the field by reading journals and attending continuing education. Attend off-site CE as required by the practice manager or as required to maintain your license.
 Organize and present training seminars for other support staff.
 Maintain constant vigilance regarding open doorways that could allow pets to escape from the facility.
 Maintain strict confidentiality regarding clients and patients for whom the practice provides veterinary services.
 Be prepared to handle any pet or facility emergency that may arise, including dog or cat fights, choking or strangulating animals, and facility fire or weather-related emergencies. Follow contingency plans.

Qualifications

· 3 to 5 years experience as a Veterinary Technician

· RVT or CVT designation preferred

· Ability to handle stress and pressure with poise and tact.

· Show respect for clients, team members, and animals (alive or deceased) at all times.

· Prefer candidates with experience in Emergency Clinics

· Requires sufficient ambulatory skills in order to perform duties while at hospital.

· Have the physical strength and ability to stand for an entire shift when needed, and be able to lift, push and pull, pets and objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Assist in lifting patients weighing more than 50 pounds.

· Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

· have physical mobility and dexterity to frequently stand, walk bend, push, twist, kneel, climb, squat, stoop, and reach overhead

· Considerable mental/visual concentration, coordinating manual dexterity with mental/visual attention, requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.

· The noise level in the work environment is moderately high.

· Must wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, and other protective items as required.

· A consistent presence at work is required.

· Must pass company required drug screen.
