911 Emergency Dispatcher
Starting Pay: $17.95 per hourPay After Successful Completion of 320-Hour On-Site Training: $18.32 per hour
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable, professional, and compassionate individual to join our team as a 911 Emergency Dispatcher. 911 dispatchers serve as the critical link between the public and emergency responders, answering emergency and non-emergency calls and coordinating police, fire, and EMS resources.
This position requires the ability to remain calm under pressure, communicate effectively, make sound decisions quickly, and accurately handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail, professionalism, reliability, and a genuine desire to serve their community.
Paid on-site training is provided. New employees will complete a structured 320-hour on-site training course designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully perform the duties of a 911 dispatcher. Upon successful completion of the 320-hour training course, the employee’s pay will increase from $17.95/hour to $18.32/hour.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Answer and process 911 emergency and non-emergency telephone calls.
- Obtain accurate and complete information from callers, including location, nature of the emergency, and pertinent details.
- Determine the appropriate emergency response and dispatch police, fire, and EMS personnel.
- Operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and other communications equipment.
- Communicate with law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other emergency responders by radio.
- Monitor multiple radio channels and maintain awareness of ongoing incidents.
- Enter and maintain accurate information and narratives in CAD.
- Prioritize calls and emergency situations based on the nature and severity of the incident.
- Provide appropriate instructions and assistance to callers while emergency personnel are responding, as permitted by agency protocols and training.
- Maintain composure and professionalism when dealing with distressed, emotional, or difficult callers.
- Accurately document information and maintain confidentiality of sensitive records.
- Coordinate information between multiple agencies and emergency responders.
- Monitor the status and safety of field personnel.
- Perform multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy.
- Follow established policies, procedures, protocols, and training standards.
- Maintain professional communication and conduct at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must pass a background check. Any felony conviction will prohibit employment with our agency.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong computer and keyboarding skills.
- Ability to learn and accurately use CAD, radio, telephone, and other dispatch systems.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful and emotionally challenging situations.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail and information retention.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.
- Must be willing and able to successfully complete the required 320-hour on-site training program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous 911, emergency communications, dispatch, law enforcement, fire, EMS, military, or other public safety experience.
- Experience working in a high-stress or fast-paced environment.
- Experience with CAD, radio communications, or emergency communications systems.
- Strong geographic knowledge of the service area.
Previous 911 dispatch experience is not required. We are willing to train the right candidate.
Work Environment
911 dispatch is a 24-hour operation. Employees must be prepared to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. Dispatchers may work extended periods in a high-stress environment and must be able to maintain focus and accuracy throughout their shift.
This position involves exposure to emotionally difficult, disturbing, and stressful situations through emergency calls and radio communications.
