DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, organize, and prioritize work to accomplish maximum quantity and quality of work assignments.

Follow principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing tasks

Follow OSHA recommended guidelines for a safe work environment.

Perform venipunctures.
- Centrifuge and process specimens.
-
Verify orders and specimen requirements.
-
Enter patient information and test orders in LIS accurately.
-
Perform maintenance and quality control for all analyzers and record results.
-
Identify all specimens before testing, making sure patient name, labels and requisitions are in agreement.
-
Perform patient testing and quality control as required following instructions in the procedure manual.
-
Verify and report test results.
-
Identify, verify, and report all "critical values".
-
Run Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation analyzer efficiently.
-
Note appearance, change of color, or precipitate that may cause interference with test results.
-
Report any problems with analysis, equipment, or quality control to Supervisor.
-
Review and/or perform manual white blood cell differentials when indicated on hematology printout.
-
Perform, record and report sedimentation rates.
-
Perform, record and report reticulocyte counts.
-
Perform, record, and report routine serological tests on blood and body fluids including: Mono-test, RA Latex, Group A Strep, Urine & Serum Pregnancy tests, HIV, Flu A& B, RSV, H. pylori.

Perform, record and report routine urinalysis including microscopic examination.

Performs blood banking procedures according to AABB and laboratory policy and procedure manuals.

Accurately identifies patient before drawing blood samples.

Performs ABO, RH typing, antibody screen, cross match and controls and records data accurately.

Notify nurse that blood is ready to be transfused.

Send positive antibody screen to blood supplier for identification by following procedure in manual.

Perform any duties not listed as directed by the Supervisor.

Perform all duties in a safe manner and follows HMH Safety Policies and Procedures.

May assist in orientating new employees.

Must have good written and oral communication skills and maintain a professional manner.

Must handle and safeguard confidential patient information daily.

Must be able to work alone and with others.
Other Duties
1. Maintain professional behavior in stressful situations.
2. Participate in unit meetings and in-service education as required by hospital policy.
3. Attendance at various committee meetings as required.
4. Other duties as assigned.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skill
1. Previous Experience Required: One year preferred.
2. Specialized or Technical Education Required:
Unrestricted and current Louisiana MLT/MT license. Must be willing, trained, competent and working on a routine basis in all areas of the laboratory
3. Manual or Physical Skill Required:
Excellent people and communication skills, pleasing telephone voice, ability to react instantly, ability to handle more than one task efficiently, ability to meet and greet the public in a professional manner. Knowledge of computer is required.
Perform proficiently a variety of chemistry, hematology, microscopic, serologic, blood bank tests and procedures, following established policies, procedures, and requirements of accrediting and regulating agencies.
