Full Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Uses clinical judgment skills to diagnose and treat patient responses to actual or potential health conditions. Assesses, monitors, detects, plans and takes appropriate action to prevent potential physiological complications and promotes optimal level of health. Accountable for integrating care within scope of practice licensure, relevant education and experience. Reports to shift Team Leader and is accountable to the Manager Patient Care Services. Utilizes Policies and Procedures to guide job duties. Level specific criteria are evaluated annually and can be found in the MNM Clinical Ladder.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Expertise: Collaborates with other members of the health care team to develop, implement, and evaluate an individualized written plan of care based upon a physiological, psychosocial, spiritual assessment consistent with patient/significant other’s changing needs & goals, utilizing the Clinical Practice Model (CPM) and the “Caring-Quality Model.”
Knowledge: Seeks life-long learning through certification, advanced practice, higher education, and literature review.
Leadership/Credibility: Demonstrates leadership through sharing of knowledge, being a clinical resource, and professional role model.
Communication: Demonstrates effective communication through collegial relationships, SBAR, and interdisciplinary communication.
Productivity: Demonstrates enhanced time management skills and ability to assist others in order to contribute to overall performance of the team.
Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed by general and unit-specific competency-based objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
License to practice nursing in the State of Michigan.
BLS certification required within one year. Certification must be issued directly by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent.
ACLS certified within one year if working Cardiac Cath Lab, CVU, ICU, Emergency Dept., Nursing Resource Pool, Ambulatory Surgery or Surgical Services. Certifications (BLS, ACLS, ALS, PALS) must be issued directly by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent.
PALS certification within one year when working in Pediatrics or the Emergency Room. PALS certifications must be issued directly by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED

Bachelor's in Nursing degree.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITLIES

Ability to interpret, synthesize, prioritize and make immediate judgments using long and short-term memory related to managing and caring for patients.
Ability to visually observe and hear, palpate and articulate clearly for accurate and timely communication.

SUBSIDIARY SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS

Completes 100% of training and in-service requirements established by MNM and by any professional or licensing organizations.
As a Magnet organization, for those hired into an RN position after January 1, 2014, it is required to obtain a BSN within five years of your start date as an RN with McLaren Northern Michigan. Certification in the specialty area of practice is strongly encouraged.
Competent within 6 months of hire with all age groups within defined patient population. Demonstrates sensitivity when interacting with diverse ethnic groups.
Designated shift may be altered due to changes in staffing patterns related to patient needs.
Works in-patient care environment and has potential exposure to infectious diseases, body fluids, needle puncture wounds, chemotherapy, radiation and certain hazardous patient care activities. May be exposed to agitated, verbally and or physically aggressive behavior.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential Physical Requirements: Standing/Walking: Constantly throughout work shift. Lift/Carry: Frequently 1-10 lbs. Occasionally up to 30 lbs. Push/Pull: Frequently using both hands and arms exerting force up to 10 lbs. Occasionally up to 50 lbs. while repositioning/assisting/transferring patients. Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching: Frequently up to durations of 4-5 minutes while changing linens, assisting patients, or retrieving items from lower shelves. Reaching: Frequent overhead reaching. Sustained forward reaching for durations up to 30 seconds. Hand/eye coordination/fine motor skills: for inserting Ivs, manipulating IV tubing and IV pumps, giving injections, drawing blood, removing sutures, and computer use.
