Full Job Description

Salary Range: $17 per hour

The Collections Assistant is responsible for supporting collections in all related activities. This includes catalog records maintenance in The Museum System (TMS); archival photography; housing; condition reporting; participating in the art handling and installations and de-installation of galleries. They will directly report to the Director of Collections and will work with the Collections Manager, Preparator and interact with the Curatorial department. This role is a grant-funded full-time position with full benefits, for a three-year position.

Collections Assistant

Reports to: Director of Collections

Department: Curatorial, Collections, and Exhibitions / Collections

Status: Full-Time

Position Overview:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in ongoing reorganization of storage.
Work with Collections Manager to house items to appropriate archival standards.
Maintain, update, and create records in The Museum System (TMS) database for collections.
Work with the Director and Collections Manager to implement standards and ensure record accuracy.
Scan to digital and attach any supplementary object information.
Work with contract photographer to take images of the collection and attach images to TMS following naming conventions.
Participate in art handling and condition reporting associated with gallery changes, including assisting in pulling items and returning to storage, ensuring locations are updated in TMS.
Assist Director and Collections Manager in repatriation activities as directed, including but not limited to: pulling items for cultural visits, assisting in visits (as appropriate and assigned), and scanning files and images.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

Experience working with art, historic, and cultural collections
Experience art handling
Knowledge of collections management systems (databases) a plus
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Detail-oriented and capable of doing repetitive tasks
Able to work in a team or individually

Education: BA degree in arts and humanities, preferably in history, art history, ethno history, anthropology, Native American/Indigenous studies.
