Full Job Description

Indy Excavating and Utilities, is seeking a skilled and reliable Pipe Layer to join our construction team! The Pipe Layer is responsible for installing and repairing underground piping systems for storm drains, sanitary sewers, water mains, and other utilities. The ideal candidate should be knowledgeable in trench safety, pipe alignment, and reading construction plans.

Key Responsibilities

Install, position, and connect various pipe materials—including PVC, ductile iron, concrete, and steel—for water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.
Work with the Operator to excavate and grade trenches using hand tools and machinery.
Verify proper slope, grade, and alignment in accordance with project plans and specifications.
Seal pipe joints using cement, adhesives, or welding methods appropriate to the pipe type.
Coordinate with equipment operators, laborers, and foremen to complete pipe installations efficiently.
Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance on installed systems to ensure functionality.
Follow all safety procedures, including trench safety practices and confined space entry requirements.
Communicate site issues, hazards, or required adjustments to supervisors in a timely manner.
Learn and comply with Indiana’s no‑dig regulations and the 811 utility‑locate process.
Maintain site organization through housekeeping and proper tool care.
Safely operate tools and small equipment—such as pipe saws, pumps, and impact wrenches—outside of standard operator duties.
Assist with setting up and maintaining traffic control systems to ensure a safe work zone.

Required Qualifications

Valid Indiana Driver’s License and safe driving record
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Minimum 1-2 years of experience as a pipe layer or in a similar construction role.
Familiarity with construction tools, pipe-laying equipment, and materials.
Competent and confident operating and reading Pipe Lasers.
Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as maps, operating manuals, and safety guidelines
Understanding of traffic control setup and maintenance
Strong physical stamina and manual dexterity, with the ability to lift over 50 pounds and perform tasks that require bending, standing, walking, and climbing

Work Conditions

Outdoor construction environment; may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions.
Frequent bending, lifting (up to 75 lbs), standing, and working in confined spaces or trenches.
