Commercial HVAC Installer & Service Technician
Parker-Arntz Plumbing and Heating is adding a Commercial HVAC Installer & Service Technician to our growing team. We are looking for an experienced HVAC professional who can support both the installation and service of commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
This position is responsible for installing, diagnosing, repairing, commissioning, maintaining, and optimizing commercial HVAC systems. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills in HVAC installation, electrical and control wiring, building automation systems, refrigeration, and airflow, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex system issues and communicate professionally with customers.
Candidates should be dependable problem-solvers who can work independently or as part of a team, read and interpret system drawings and schematics, follow manufacturer specifications, and maintain a strong commitment to safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Key ResponsibilitiesHVAC Installation
- Install commercial HVAC systems and equipment, including RTUs, split systems, VRF/VRV systems, heat pumps, boilers, air handlers, VAV systems, exhaust systems, energy recovery units, ductwork, and related components.
- Install and connect sheet metal and flexible duct systems to support proper airflow and ventilation.
- Install electrical components, low-voltage wiring, controls, sensors, actuators, relays, and other system connections.
- Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, ladder logic, system layouts, and manufacturer specifications.
- Perform system start-up and commissioning to verify equipment is installed and operating properly.
- Inspect installations for leaks, proper airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant charge, and overall system performance.
- Ensure installations meet local building codes, safety regulations, company standards, and manufacturer requirements.
Service, Diagnostics & Repair
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain commercial heating, cooling, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment.
- Conduct advanced diagnostics of electrical, refrigeration, mechanical, and control-related system issues.
- Diagnose system failures using wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, and sequence-of-operation documentation.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance to improve equipment performance and reduce unexpected breakdowns.
- Identify system deficiencies and recommend appropriate repairs, upgrades, or equipment replacement.
- Maintain accurate documentation of service work, repairs, system conditions, and recommendations.
Control Wiring & Building Automation
- Install, troubleshoot, repair, and commission control wiring, sensors, actuators, relays, transformers, and low-voltage circuits.
- Interface with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and troubleshoot communication, wiring, control, and sequence-of-operation issues.
- Identify incorrect wiring, failed controls, sensors, actuators, or programming issues affecting HVAC system performance.
- Verify proper system sequences and communication between HVAC equipment and control systems.
- Recommend controls upgrades, retrofits, and energy-efficiency improvements when appropriate.
Airflow & System Optimization
- Perform airflow testing, adjustment, and balancing of commercial HVAC systems.
- Verify proper operation of VAV boxes, dampers, economizers, static pressure controls, exhaust systems, and ventilation equipment.
- Utilize airflow measurement equipment such as manometers, flow hoods, anemometers, temperature probes, and pressure gauges.
- Inspect duct systems and HVAC components for airflow restrictions, leaks, or installation deficiencies.
- Recommend system adjustments to improve comfort, efficiency, airflow, and overall system performance.
Customer Service & Communication
- Communicate technical findings clearly and professionally to facility managers, contractors, building owners, and customers.
- Explain system conditions, repair recommendations, preventative maintenance needs, and equipment operation.
- Prepare accurate service reports and documentation outlining work performed and recommended follow-up actions.
- Educate customers on the proper use and care of HVAC equipment.
- Represent Parker-Arntz Plumbing and Heating with professionalism, reliability, and a customer-first approach.
Safety & Jobsite Responsibilities
- Follow all OSHA requirements, company safety procedures, and jobsite regulations.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles in clean, safe, and working condition.
- Work collaboratively with installers, service technicians, contractors, project managers, and supervisors to complete work safely and efficiently.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Properly handle refrigerants and other HVAC-related materials according to federal, state, and local regulations.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2+ years of HVAC installation and/or service experience required.
- Commercial HVAC experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical wiring, refrigeration, controls, and airflow principles.
- Experience installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing commercial HVAC equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Strong electrical and low-voltage troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of HVAC tools and diagnostic equipment, including pressure gauges, multimeters, thermometers, manometers, airflow meters, and other industry-related equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and effectively manage assigned service calls and projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and ability to be insured to drive company vehicles.
- Ability to pass required pre-employment screening.
Certifications
- EPA 608 Certification – Type II or Universal required or willingness to obtain.
- OSHA 10 certification required or willingness to obtain.
- NATE certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- HVAC technical school certification or associate degree preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with Building Automation Systems, including platforms such as Trane, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Carrier, or similar systems.
- Commercial control wiring and low-voltage troubleshooting experience.
- Commercial air balancing and airflow testing experience.
- Experience commissioning new HVAC equipment and systems.
- Technical schooling in HVAC, controls, electronics, refrigeration, or a related field.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to perform the physical requirements associated with commercial HVAC installation and service work, including:
- Working in crawl spaces, attics, mechanical rooms, rooftops, confined spaces, and other jobsite environments.
- Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Bending, reaching, stooping, crouching, crawling, and kneeling.
- Lifting, carrying, positioning, and handling HVAC equipment, tools, materials, and components as required.
- Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather and temperature conditions.
Compensation
Pay: $30.00 – $41.00 per hour, based on experience, technical capabilities, certifications, and qualifications.
