Based in Southeast Michigan | Nationwide Travel Required
Employment Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $60,000–$85,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
Travel: This position requires travel throughout all 50 states, with assignments typically lasting 1–3 weeks at a time. Opportunities to return home on weekends may be available depending on the project schedule. All travel expenses are covered, including airfare, lodging, rental vehicles (when applicable), and a generous daily meal allowance.

SP Consulting is seeking an experienced Traveling Construction Superintendent to oversee field operations for our Commercial Exterior Crash Safety Program. This position is dedicated to managing crash-rated barrier installation projects at commercial retail properties throughout the United States.

About Our Commercial Exterior Crash Safety Program
SP Consulting’s Commercial Exterior Crash Safety Program manages the installation of crash-rated vehicle barrier systems for some of the nation’s largest corporate retailers.
These systems are designed to protect storefronts while complementing the architectural appearance of each property. Every project presents unique site conditions requiring careful planning, coordination with multiple trades, interpretation of construction documents, and strict adherence to manufacturer-specific installation requirements.
Many projects require creative field solutions to accommodate varying site conditions while ensuring every installation meets engineering requirements, manufacturer specifications, and the highest standards of safety and quality.
As the Traveling Construction Superintendent, your primary responsibility will be overseeing these installations from project mobilization through final completion, ensuring every project is executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard.
Position Overview
The Traveling Construction Superintendent is responsible for leading all field operations from project mobilization through final completion.
Working closely with the Project Manager, you will coordinate subcontractors, maintain project schedules, oversee quality control, enforce safety standards, and ensure each project is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans and manufacturer specifications.
This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication, sound decision-making, and the ability to solve problems independently while representing SP Consulting professionally in the field.
Responsibilities
- Subcontractor Coordination: Oversee and coordinate subcontractors to ensure work is completed in accordance with project plans, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and schedule milestones.
- Project Planning & Scheduling: Establish field priorities, develop execution strategies, maintain look-ahead schedules, and proactively identify potential delays to keep projects on track.
- Field Supervision: Direct and manage day-to-day jobsite operations while coordinating subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and other trades to maintain productivity, efficiency, and quality.
- Safety Oversight: Enforce OSHA regulations and company safety policies, conduct routine safety inspections, and stop work when necessary to maintain a safe jobsite.
- Quality Control & Compliance: Ensure all work complies with project specifications, manufacturer installation requirements, engineering details, applicable building codes, ADA requirements, and company quality standards. Identify and correct deficiencies promptly.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate project documentation, including daily reports, quality inspections, material tracking, project photographs, change documentation, expense reports, and supporting receipts.
- Client & Project Manager Communication: Serve as the primary field representative by providing regular progress updates, participating in site meetings, coordinating with Project Managers, and attending scheduled virtual meetings with clients and internal teams.
- Material & Equipment Management: Coordinate material deliveries, inspect incoming shipments, and ensure proper storage, maintenance, and accountability of all equipment and materials on-site.
- Problem Solving & Field Adaptability: Assess changing jobsite conditions, identify potential conflicts, and develop practical solutions while maintaining project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
- Project Closeout: Coordinate final inspections, complete punch list items, submit all required closeout documentation, verify project completion, and ensure a smooth turnover to the client.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of experience supervising commercial construction projects as a Superintendent, Foreman, or similar leadership role.
- Proven ability to independently manage multiple commercial construction projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong understanding of commercial exterior construction and site development, including:
- Concrete construction
- Excavation
- Demolition
- Blueprint reading
- Precision layout and installation
- ADA compliance
- Equipment operation
- Experience working with municipal officials, building departments, and government inspectors.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, engineering plans, and manufacturer installation requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing jobsite conditions.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience using Procore construction management software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and other project management software.
- Experience managing commercial construction projects for national retail clients.
