Plano Police Officers are hired from an eligibility roster of those who successfully passed a Police Recruit Civil Service Entrance Exam.

Our next Civil Service Examination will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 8:30 am at the Plano Event Center (2000 East Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX 75074).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The eligibility requirements for Plano Police Recruits are established by the City of Plano Fire Fighters’ and Police Officers’ Civil Service Commission. The following represent part of these requirements. Applicants must:

Be at least 21 years of age at the date of hire.
Be a United States citizen.

Those applying for a beginning position in the Police Department one :

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university at the time of their start date with the department, OR
60 semester hours credit from an accredited college or university at the time of their start date with the department AND at least 3 years prior Active Duty military service, OR
60 semester hours credit from an accredited college or university at the time of their start date with the department AND 2 years full-time, paid sworn law enforcement experience, OR
Possess at least two (2) years of full-time service in any position with the Plano Police Department or Plano Public Safety Communications shall have, in lieu of baccalaureate degree, a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours credit from a college or university accredited by the United Stated Department of Education or Council for Higher Education Accreditation at the time of their start date with the Police Department.

Must also meet the following requirements:

Be able to perform the essential duties of a Police Officer.
Meet all legal requirements necessary for future licensing and certification as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Applicants who are now discharged but have a minimum of 180 consecutive days on Active Duty in the Armed Forces of the United States may be eligible to receive five (5) additional points if:

Applicant received a passing raw score of 70;
Applicant received an “Honorable” discharge (General discharges under honorable conditions, etc. are not eligible);
Applicant submitted a , undeleted ( sections 23-30) prior to the completion of the exam.

Please review list of disqualifications – Cause for disqualification for Police exam. Prior to submitting your application you will be required to acknowledge that you have read them.

The eligibility list shall be in effect for 6 months from the date of examination, unless exhausted earlier.

Additional Information

Upon request, accommodations will be considered for applicants in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended (ADAAA). If you need special arrangements to be considered, the following information must be submitted by the registration deadline:

A current letter (dated within the last 12 months of the request) from a licensed physician, optometrist, social worker, or psychologist (including title, address and telephone number on professional letterhead).
A description of the functional limitation as it applies to taking a standardized multi-choice examination.
Specific accommodations needed for testing. Request should be sent to the Civil Service Director at 1520 Avenue K, Suite 130, Plano, TX 75074.
