Job Summary
Oversees the day-today operations of Aquarius Reef Base included but not limited to: overseeing commercial diving, monitoring and maintaining all systems, coordinating diving activities with research teams, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations and conducting inspections. Will serve as Dive Safety Officer for working dives.
- Responsible for Monitoring and maintaining all systems including: life support systems, high and low pressure compressed gas system, environmental control system, computer, electronic, and electrical systems. Coordinates all diving activities involving excursions in and out of the habitat including: inspection and preparation of dive equipment, conducting pre and post dive briefings, notifying topside of divers exiting and returning to the habitat, maintaining diving and system logs.
- Assists scientists/aquanauts in the accomplishment of underwater research tasks including: placement and retrieval of experiments, measuring and documenting, video and still photography, sampling and collecting, monitoring, and observing.
- Serves as Habitat Supervisor, Dive Supervisor, Recompression Chamber Supervisor, and Vessel Captain on selected research missions involving the Aquarius underwater laboratory.
- Supervises the operational staff for the Aquarius program; tasks and evaluates the staff under this position.
- Serves in the capacity as the FIU Diving Safety Officer for working dives.
- Responsible for keeping current with reporting requirements for federal and state permits required for the operations of Aquarius Reef Base.
- Directs day-to-day operations of the Aquarius Reef Base facility in the Florida Keys.
- For safety oversight of diving related to the Aquarius Reef Base, seeks approval from the Diving Control Board and/or the Aquarius Operations Diving Control Board for all Aquarius missions.
- Responsible for the oversight of commercial and research vessels to ensure safety equipment and compliance with boating regulations and licenses.
- Serves as working diver, lead diver, dive supervisor, and/or mission coordinator during air, mixed gas, decompression, and/or saturation research diving operations involving a variety of diving technologies as appropriate for the organization.
- Manages quality assurance and quality compliance issues with institutional diving policies.
- Implements and monitors compliance of policies and procedures established by the Diving Control Board, the Aquarius Operations Diving Control Board, the Boat Safety Committee University and/or any Federal Agency.
- Recommends changes in policy and amendments to the FIU Aquarius Operations Diving Control Board.
- Contacts FIU Dive Control Board for approval of any deviations from the manual.
- Oversees the certification and training of scientific and working divers, including first aid, CPR and oxygen provider courses.
- Oversees all commercial diving operations at the University.
- Performs underwater tasks under adverse/difficult conditions.
- Provides oversight of technical programs and administrative activities of dive lockers, ancillary equipment, and facilities.
- Recruiting, training, and managing the team including: aquatic operations staff and vessel captains
- compliance with health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintains and completes the required documentation for diving activity, diver training, equipment maintenance and inventory.
- Ensures the adherence to appropriate procedures for using and maintaining equipment or technical instruments associated with scientific and/or commercial diving operations to meet industry standards in a safe, efficient and effective manner.
- Oversees the management of facility, equipment, supplies, and related resources in compliance with health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
- Performs essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification from a department administrator.
- Works with the University Diving Scientific Safety Officer/Boat Safety Officer on matters related to scheduling missions, equipment needs and diving plans.
- Provides leadership in the supervision in the maintenance and renovation of research space.
- Ensures that the department/program/project outcomes are in alignment with University's expectations and standards

- Responsible for planning, directing and reporting all special events .
- Collaborates with developing and implementing strategies for the overall direction of the Aquarius Reef Base
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Commercial Dive school or Military Dive school OR related On-The Job (OJT) training with a working diving operation.
- 6 years of commercial diving or military diving experience OR an equivalent combination of education, and/or OJT.
- Experience and/or certification as a decompression or recompression chamber operator, Diver Medical Technician (DMT), Hyperbaric Technologist/Technician or related field.
Departmental Requirements
- Requires that the incumbent gets the USCG Captain License within 12 months of employment.
Desired Qualifications
- Supervisory experience in on- and underwater marine operations.
- 2 years of experience in saturation diving and familiarity with OSHA rules and regulations.
- Experience as a supervisor of research and commercial or military diving activities.
- CPR, First Aid and Oxygen Administrator Instructor certification
- Kirby Morgan Surface Supplied Diver Instructor / Technician
- Full Face Mask Instructor.
- Recompression Chamber Supervisor / Trainer.
- ADCI or DCBC certifications
- DMT Instructor
- Saturation Diving Instructor.
