About the Role
The Machinist role provides a structured career path from Trainee through Machinist Supervisor, with increasing responsibility, technical complexity, leadership scope, and operational impact. This position supports the precision machining of low- to high-complexity aerospace components using CNC milling and turning centers.

Key Responsibilities
The scope of duties expands with each career level, as outlined below.
Common Responsibilities (All Levels)
- Review drawings, specifications, and work instructions prior to machining
- Produce quality parts that meet all drawing and documented requirements
- Operate one or more CNC machines concurrently, as appropriate to level
- Use calibrated precision measuring instruments and gauges for in-process inspection
- Record labor time and quantities produced in Work Orders and ERP systems
- Maintain accurate and complete production documentation
- Deburr and clean parts using approved techniques
- Maintain clean, organized, and FOD-free work areas
- Report nonconforming material or questionable conditions
- Assist with machine maintenance as required
- Follow all safety guidelines, company policies, and quality standards
- Consistently demonstrate Ausco’s 30 Specifications values, promoting a positive, respectful, and high-integrity workplace culture.
- Demonstrate positive working relationships and teamwork
- Suggest and support continuous improvement initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned

Level-Specific Responsibilities
Machinist Trainee - Not Currently Hiring
- Work under direct supervision on low-complexity parts
- Learn CNC machine operation, tooling, gauging, and basic setups
- Inspect parts using basic preset measuring instruments
- Gain familiarity with ERP systems, documentation, and shop procedures
Machinist 3rd Class - Not Currently Hiring
- Work under direct supervision with increasing independence
- Machine low-complexity parts to specification
- Consistently produce accurate work with minimal rework
- Perform basic inspections and operate CMM/Vision systems as directed
Machinist 2nd Class
- Work under general supervision on medium- to high-complexity parts
- Setup, run, and monitor machines including speeds and feeds
- Inspect first pieces prior to Lead review and inspect own work throughout jobs
- Retrieve tooling and gauging as required
- Download and upload programs via DNC systems
- Mentor, coach, and train new hires and colleagues to build capability, reinforce best practices, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive culture that encourages collaboration and positive interactions across the team.
- Identify machining issues and work with Leads to resolve barriers
Machinist 1st Class
- Work under minimal supervision on the highest complexity parts
- Independently setup, run, and adjust CNC machine centers
- Optimize feeds, speeds, tool life, and processes
- Perform advanced inspections using all measuring equipment and CMM/Vision systems
- Mentor, coach, and train new hires and colleagues to build capability, reinforce best practices, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive culture that encourages collaboration and positive interactions across the team.
- Assist Leads with oversight of lower-level machinists
- Support standardization and improvement of work instructions
- Anticipate and resolve production challenges independently
Machinist Lead - Not Currently Hiring
- Lead and supervise machinists within a designated machining area
- Assign work, review schedules, and report machine and production status
- Perform all machining duties of subordinates
- Mentor, coach, and train new hires and colleagues to build capability, reinforce best practices, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive culture that encourages collaboration and positive interactions across the team.
- Inspect own work and work produced by direct reports
- Program, retrieve, and control CNC programs and setup data
- Perform or oversee machine maintenance and parameter adjustments
- Co-lead training and skill development with Manufacturing Supervisor
- Ensure cleanliness, safety, and documentation integrity across assigned machines
Senior Machinist Lead - Not Currently Hiring
- Lead machining operations involving the most complex parts and rework
- Plan and perform high-complexity rework on detail and top-level assemblies
- Create, control, and optimize CNC programs
- Mentor, coach, and train new hires and colleagues to build capability, reinforce best practices, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive culture that encourages collaboration and positive interactions across the team.
- Act as senior technical authority within assigned machining areas
- Support engineering-directed rework and discrepancy resolution
- Drive advanced process improvements and mentoring across the department
Machinist Supervisor - Not Currently Hiring
- Provide overall supervision of the machine shop, including Lead Machinists
- Plan and assign work daily to meet production schedules and delivery commitments
- Program CNC milling and turning machines using Mastercam and/or manual G-code
- Analyze and resolve production, quality, and workflow issues
- Lead training, performance management, and employee development
- Review nonconforming material and contribute to root cause and corrective action
- Collaborate with Engineering on manufacturability, new designs, and work instructions
- Approve timekeeping, time off, and conduct performance appraisals
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and company policies
- Contribute to continuous improvement and strategic manufacturing initiatives

3rd Class
HS Diploma or Technical School
1–3 years machining
Consistent quality, basic inspections
2nd Class
HS Diploma or Technical School
3–6 years machining
Machine setup, troubleshooting
1st Class
HS Diploma or Technical School
7+ years machining
Advanced setups, optimization, mentoring
All levels require:
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
- Mathematical proficiency for machining calculations
- English language proficiency
- Strong attention to detail and accountability
Additional Requirements
- Compliance with company, customer, and regulatory safety and quality standards
- Flexibility to support business needs outside normal hours
- Travel as required for training or business purposes
- Must be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods, up to [8–10] hours per shift, with limited sitting time
Compensation & Career Growth
- Salary Range: $22.00 – $45.00 hourly
- Career progression from Trainee → 3rd Class → 2nd Class → 1st Class reflects increasing skill, responsibility, and impact
- Candidates may be considered for higher or lower levels based on experience and demonstrated value
