Full Job Description

Summary: The SPCA of Tompkins County, located in Ithaca NY, was incorporated in 1902 in an effort to end cruelty and provide safe shelter to the unwanted, abandoned, and homeless animals of Tompkins County. The mission of the SPCA of Tompkins County is to protect companion animals. We are a no-kill shelter dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and overpopulation. We promote responsible pet stewardship by providing education, counseling and training to nurture and enhance the human-animal bond.The Adoption Counselor serves as a compassionate and knowledgeable resource for potential adopters and community members, helping match animals with suitable homes while supporting the overall mission of the shelter and clinic operations. This role combines customer service, animal welfare advocacy, adoption counseling, and administrative support to create positive experiences for adopters and pet owners alike.

Key Responsibilities:

Guide prospective adopters through the adoption process, including interviews, counseling, and education
Match animals with adopters based on lifestyle, expectations, and animal behavior/history
Provide accurate information about animal care, behavior, medical needs, and shelter policies
Process adoption paperwork, contracts, medical records, and fees accurately
Maintain detailed and organized records and database entries
Assist with animal introductions, meet-and-greets, and adoption events
Support public veterinary clinic operations by assisting with animal drop-off and pickup appointments
Communicate with pet owners regarding appointment procedures, paperwork, discharge instructions, and follow-up care information
Ensure accurate intake and discharge documentation for publicly owned animals receiving clinic services
Coordinate with clinic and shelter staff to support efficient daily operations and positive client experiences
Support daily shelter operations, including cleaning, enrichment, feeding, and kennel monitoring as needed
Communicate professionally and compassionately with the public, staff, volunteers, and rescue partners
Help resolve post-adoption concerns and provide follow-up support when appropriate
Promote responsible pet ownership and humane education
Ensure compliance with shelter policies, safety procedures, and animal welfare standards

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in animal science, veterinary technology, or related fields preferred
Previous experience in animal welfare, customer service, veterinary clinics, or nonprofit environments preferred
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to handle emotionally sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy
Comfortable working with animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical needs
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Basic computer and data entry skills
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including standing, bending, cleaning, and walking dogs

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of animal behavior and basic animal handling techniques
Experience with shelter or veterinary software systems
Familiarity with clinic scheduling and client communication
Fear Free or animal handling certifications preferred

Work EnvironmentThis position operates in an active animal shelter and veterinary clinic environment and may involve exposure to noise, cleaning chemicals, allergens, and emotionally challenging situations involving animal illness, neglect, or euthanasia.

Pay: From $17.00 per hour
