Job Title: Building Supervisor
Shifts: Weekdays, 4-8pm and Weekends
FLSA Status: Non-exempt - Part-time
Starting Pay Rate: $16.50
Reports to: Sr. Director of Membership & Programs
Revision Date: 09/23/2025
Primary Function/Department: Membership

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County is seeking a friendly, dependable Building Supervisor to lead our facility during evening and weekend hours. In this role, you will serve as the on-site leader responsible for total building safety, security, and supervision in the absence of leadership staff. The Building Supervisor ensures member and program participant safety, enforces membership and building policies, supports staff, and responds to all emergencies and management-level questions. Duties include making regular checks of all areas of the building and grounds, providing excellent service to members and guests, giving potential member tours, and fostering a welcoming environment for all who enter our Y.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Welcome and engage members and guests, creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment while modeling YMCA service and engagement principles.
Provide excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in person and by phone, including handling questions, concerns, and complaints with professionalism; escalate unresolved issues to leadership staff as appropriate.
Respond to and manage all emergencies, incidents, and injuries involving members, guests, or staff, ensuring proper documentation and communication with leadership.
Monitor the building and grounds for safety and security through regular rounds; address areas of concern, enforce YMCA policies, and ensure walkways and entrances remain clear and accessible.
Enforce facility hours and building closing procedures, ensuring all areas are secured according to standards.
Support Front Desk operations, including assisting with member tours, program information, and general questions during prime-time hours.
Act as the first point of contact for facility issues or incidents, ensuring all are addressed promptly and reported accurately.
Complete and submit the Manager on Duty/shift report at the end of each shift, highlighting health or safety concerns, behavioral issues, staffing notes, and other relevant information for leadership review.
Ensure staff on duty are acting as positive role models of the Y’s mission and report concerns to supervisors as needed.
Collaborate across departments and provide support where needed to maintain smooth operations and a welcoming environment.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or Leadership Team members.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of 18 years of age.
Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
Previous building safety/security/management and/or customer service experience.
Possess the competence and confidence to supervise a safe environment for all members, program participants, volunteers, and staff.
Demonstrate the ability to cooperate and work with other Y staff to provide a quality environment.
Work history that demonstrates strong work ethic, punctuality, and reliable attendance.
First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency O2 Administration Certifications required within 30 days of hire (provided by YMCA).
Excellent interpersonal, observation, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Be friendly and professional at all times, while also enforcing policies fairly.
Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
Basic knowledge of computers and computer applications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move around the building between two stories on a continuous basis.
The employee must be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
The employee must occasionally utilize snow removing and salt spreading equipment.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
