Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented School Bus Mechanic Helper. The School Bus Mechanic Helper is responsible for assisting experienced diesel mechanics with various tasks related to school bus maintenance and repair.
This is a 12-month position
Duties
- Knowledge of automotive materials and safety related equipment.
- Assist with repairs by helping the diesel mechanics with inspecting, diagnosing and repairing vehicles.
- Keep the workshop clean and organized, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake checks to prevent breakdowns.
- Ability to maintain operating and test records, write clear work orders, requisitions, and material list. Assis with maintaining detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labor hours.
- Perform safety inspections on school buses to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and assist with on-site repairs as needed.
- Lift heavy equipment, climb and work from ladders, run power machines and tools.
- Work with diesel mechanic and transportation staff to ensure the fleet is in optimal condition.
Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance, preferably with school buses or similar vehicles.
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in diesel mechanics is preferred.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of protective safety equipment
- Must be able to maintain mechanical certificates as required by the state of Michigan.

Skills, Certifications and Licenses
- Must maintain a Class B CDL with Air Brake, Passenger and School Bus Endorsements within 60 days of employment.
- Must be able to maintain mechanical certificates as required by the state of Michigan.
- Must maintain DOT physical and participate in the DOT random drug & Alcohol testing as required by the DOT.
- Must pass a state and Federal Criminal Background check (fingerprint) as required by METS and the district.
