This position is the full-performance level of work providing occupational therapy treatments to clients who are aged or physically ill, have physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, or behavioral health diagnoses of State inpatient, residential or vocational rehabilitation treatment facilities or community based programs in clinics, schools or home settings. This position is responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of clients’/patients’ occupational therapy treatment. This position may oversee the work of Occupational Therapy Assistants and support staff. This position receives general supervision from an Occupational Therapist Supervisor or other licensed health professional. This position may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends. This position may be subject to call-in and overtime. This position is required to observe infection control precautions and may be required to lift and move clients and equipment. This position may be required to physically restrain patients/clients displaying violent and aggressive behavior.
Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of a class specification. The Occupational Therapist I and the Occupational Therapist II are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees. The Occupational Therapist I performs duties in a community-based program under close supervision at times and under general supervision at other times depending on the complexity of the specific duty being performed. This position performs the full range of duties in a State inpatient, residential or vocational rehabilitation treatment facility or community-based program under general supervision. The Occupational Therapist II is differentiated from the Occupational Therapist Institutional in that the Occupational Therapist Institutional performs duties in a State residential treatment facility under close supervision at times and under general supervision at other times depending on the complexity of the specific duty being performed. This position is differentiated from the Occupational Therapist Lead and the Occupational Therapist Advanced in that the Occupational Therapist Lead assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level Occupational Therapists while the Occupational Therapist Advanced functions as the sole Occupational Therapist responsible for all therapy services at a State Facility or local Health Department.
Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Occupational Therapy Practice under the licensing requirements for Occupational Therapists.
Experience: One year of experience as an Occupational Therapist.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Therapy classifications or Therapy specialty codes in the Occupation Therapy field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
The desired candidate should possess the following:
- Experience working in the mental health setting and/or with individuals with psychiatric conditions and collaborating effectively with a diverse team of health professionals
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively engage others by maintaining emotional control and/or using persuasive communication techniques, and to administer, interpret, and document specialized occupational therapy assessments
- Skilled in safely and therapeutically engaging high-risk patients, including knowledge of security protocols, therapeutic boundaries, de-escalation, and integrating sensory/environmental modifications to ensure safety and mitigate aggression in a secure forensic environment
1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as an Occupational Therapist from the Maryland State Board of Occupational Therapy Practice, Spring Grove Hospital Center, 55 Wade Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21228.
2. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.
3. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
