POSITION: Reference Librarian
REPORTS TO: Reference Supervisor
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Cambria County Library System seeks a dynamic, flexible and technology-forward professional to work daily at the Reference desk; operate the copier and fax machines; assist with computer, technology, and reference questions both in person and over the phone; help plan and implement adult programming; manage and select for the collection; and provide reader’s advisory, among other duties.
DUTIES:
1. Work scheduled shifts each day on the Reference Desk, and answer reference questions by phone, in person, and via online services. Assist patrons with sending faxes, scanning documents and making copies. Operate the cash register, count out the drawer, make change and handle credit card transactions.
2. Assist patrons searching the online catalog and help patrons locate materials in the physical collection using the Dewey Decimal System. Utilize the Spark integrated library system to search, place holds, update accounts, as well as actively manage the circulation and tracking of mobile hotspots.
3. Assist patrons with computer or smartphone questions and provide digital literacy instruction including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, internet navigation, photo editing, creating, saving and printing documents, and safely creating online accounts.
4. Plan and implement programming for adults in conjunction with the department, including the coordination of assigned adult programs like Hour with a Librarian.
5. Select materials for the circulating collection based on an assigned call number designation.
6. Weed and update the assigned collection as needed.
7. Collaborate with both internal staff and external partner organizations related to services, resources, and programs.
8. Pull microfilm, newspapers, obituaries and magazines for patrons as needed. Retrieve microfilm for patrons and assist them with using the microfilm readers as needed. Assist in providing basic genealogy and local history Reference services.
9. Scan historically significant materials from the library collections, donated collections and loaned collections. Perform preservation assessments of materials as requested. Create and organize files to be uploaded to PA Photos and Docs using designated equipment. Create, organize and enter original descriptive metadata for content uploaded to PA Photos and Docs.
10. Create book displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards for the department on a monthly basis.
11. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s Degree in Library Science
2. Ability to demonstrate superior customer service
3. Excellent computer and communication skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft365 suite, Google Workspace, AI, and social media platforms.
