Full Job Description

The Unified Clinics at Western Michigan University is a large, multi-specialty group practice that provides quality clinical services to the community while also providing valuable clinical training experiences for students in the College of Health and Human Services.

We are seeking a Verification and Authorization Specialist to join our administrative team. This position plays an important role in ensuring patients are appropriately registered, insurance benefits are accurately verified, and required authorizations are obtained before services are provided.

Position Responsibilities

The Verification and Authorization Specialist will be responsible for a variety of insurance, authorization, and administrative functions, including:

Verifying patient insurance eligibility and benefits
Reviewing insurance coverage and identifying patient financial responsibilities
Obtaining and maintaining required prior authorizations for services
Communicating with insurance companies regarding eligibility, benefits, authorizations, and coverage requirements
Monitoring authorization dates, approved services, visit limits, and expiration dates
Following up on pending authorization requests and ensuring required documentation is submitted timely
Reviewing referrals and insurance information for accuracy and completeness
Communicating with clinical staff regarding insurance requirements and authorization status
Assisting with resolving insurance-related questions and discrepancies
Maintaining accurate and confidential patient information in the electronic medical record
Documenting verification and authorization information accurately
Communicating professionally with patients, insurance representatives, providers, and clinic staff
Assisting with referrals, scheduling, registration, and other administrative duties as needed
Following HIPAA, University, and Unified Clinics policies and procedures

Dependable and able to meet deadlines
Comfortable working with insurance information and healthcare terminology
Professional and confident when communicating with insurance companies and patients
An excellent written and verbal communicator
Able to manage multiple priorities in a busy clinical environment
Comfortable working independently while also being a strong team member
Customer-service focused and able to maintain a welcoming, helpful attitude
Discreet and committed to protecting patient confidentiality
Proficient with computers and comfortable learning electronic medical record and insurance systems

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following is preferred but not required:

Healthcare insurance verification
Prior authorization processing
Medical referrals
Patient registration
Medical billing or patient accounts
Electronic medical records
Working with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, or other third-party payers
