Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – Travel Contract

Facility: Paducah – Surgical Services
Location: Paducah, KY 42003
Department: Surgical Services
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Schedule

Monday–Friday
6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
40 hours/week
8-hour shifts
Call: 1 night per week
Weekend Call: Every 4th weekend
Must be willing to assist in other surgical pods as needed
General / GYN / Da Vinci experience preferred

Job Summary

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) serves as the primary scrub person or surgical assistant during operative procedures. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining the sterile field, assisting the surgical team during procedures, performing instrument and sponge counts, and completing post-operative room and instrument cleanup.

Key Responsibilities

Surgical Preparation – 35%

Scrub into surgical cases and prepare the operating room.
Ensure all required instruments, supplies, and equipment are available for scheduled procedures.
Set up surgical cases and verify instruments have been properly sterilized.
Establish and maintain the sterile field during case preparation.
Identify and communicate potential risks or deviations from standard procedures to the circulating nurse.

During Surgical Procedures – 35%

Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon as required.
Assist physicians during surgical procedures.
Cut suture material when requested.
Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeding vessels under direct surgeon supervision when required.
Perform accurate instrument, sponge, and sharps counts.
Maintain the sterile field throughout the procedure.
Assist with patient draping and positioning in collaboration with the circulating RN.
Work closely with the circulating nurse to implement appropriate interventions.

Post-Case Cleanup – 20%

Assist the circulating nurse and surgical staff with post-procedure cleanup.
Perform gross decontamination of surgical instruments and break down instruments for further processing by Central Sterile Processing.
Follow established standards for instrument transportation and return to Central Sterile.
Identify and report damaged or malfunctioning instruments to the appropriate leader.
Ensure the surgical suite is properly disinfected and prepared for the next procedure.
Check supply par levels and restock the room as needed.

Hospital Policies & Procedures – 10%

Complete all required hospital education and training.
Maintain compliance with HR and Employee Health requirements.
Follow all operating room safety policies and procedures.
Complete required age-specific annual competency assessments.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 7 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
Strong experience functioning as a scrub person in operative procedures.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
Ability to meet deadlines and performance expectations.
Willingness to assist in other surgical pods as needed.

Education

One of the following is required:

Completion of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program, OR
Completion of a Surgical Technologist program through the United States Armed Forces.

Required Certifications

BLS certification
One of the following:
NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), OR
NCCT Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C)

Preferred Experience

General Surgery
Gynecology (GYN)
Da Vinci / Robotic Surgery
Willingness to take scheduled night and weekend call.

Contract Details

13-week contract | 40 hours/week | Monday–Friday | 6:30 AM–3:00 PM | Weekly night call + every 4th weekend call.

Pay: $50.00 - $52.00 per hour
