Summary

About the Position: This position is located at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.
Student Loan repayment may be authorized.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Duties

Perform roasting, broiling, baking, frying, boiling, steaming and stewing meats, fish, and poultry. Prepare soups, stocks, broths, gravies, sauces, and sauces, and puddings without the use of packaged mixes.
Make a variety of dessert items such as pies, cakes, cookies and simple breads and rolls and adjust standardized recipes for the number of servings required in large quantity cooking.
Prepare breakfast items, which include pancakes, french toast, and eggs to order for patient trays and cafeteria line. Prepare short orders such as hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, ham and cheese, etc., for lunch and dinner.
Maintain the proper temperature for all foods during holding, transporting, reheating and serving to assure quality control and food safety.
Maintain rotation of food inventories to prevent spoilage and provide assistance to the supervisor of a higher-grade worker in ordering food in accordance with daily and weekly menu requirements.
Operate various mixers, steam kettles, electric urns and other powered mechanical kitchen equipment used in preparation and serving of food.
Clean and maintain in sanitary condition equipment and work areas, sweeping and mopping floors, washing utensils, tables and refrigerators and cleaning ovens and ranges.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
Selectees may be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
A pre-placement medical examination is required.
This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Cook without more than normal supervision. Cook an entire meal and coordinate its preparation to produce a properly cooked meal on time. Roast, broil, bake, fry, boil, steam and stew a variety of foods. Determine whether cooked foods are done by their appearance, consistency, texture and temperature. Possess a working knowledge of principles of food spoilage, food borne illness, and food safety. Operate standard food service equipment such as a food processor, slicing machine, rotary or convection oven, or a deep fat fryer. Work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
