Full Job Description

Definition

Come join our team as a part-time Department Assistant.

Currently there is one part-time vacancy in the Library Services Department. The selected candidate will be highly organized, adaptable, and capable of learning and performing a variety of tasks. This position is responsible for generalist duties within the Literacy Office. Responsibilities include answering the phone, responding to emails, as well as inquiries made in person, providing information and referrals, taking down contact information, and assisting the Literacy Coordinator with trainings and events. The candidate will also maintain the Project Adult Literacy calendar, send out the Literacy newsletter, ensure the office is well stocked, and notify the Coordinator when low on supplies.

The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future part-time Department Assistant vacancies as they occur throughout the City.

Selection Components:

Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of July 21, 2026 or at 150 applications - whichever occurs first. Applicants that apply after the first review are not guaranteed to be considered for this recruitment. Candidates are encouraged to apply immediately as this recruitment may close at any time. This position will remain open until filled.
Online Skills Testing: The most qualified applicants will be invited to take an online clerical exam and computer skills testing tentatively scheduled for the week of July 28, 2026.
Virtual Interview: Top scoring applicants will be invited to a virtual interview tentatively scheduled for the week of August 18, 2026.

Schedule

Library Services Department: This position may work up to 19 hours per week during weekdays, with occasional weekend rotation as needed.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Three or more years of increasingly responsible secretarial and clerical experience.

Education: Equivalent to completion of high school, supplemented by coursework or training in word processing and spreadsheet software programs, and work planning and management.

License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record may be required.

May be required to obtain CPR, First Aid, and/or AED (Automated external defibrillator) certifications within six months of hire.
